Nearly Wild Weaving Experience

Spring in the Heritage Area

Description

Exploring nature and the countryside through the art of tapestry weaving.

Suitable for people wanting to try out a new craft, beginners and more experienced tapestry weavers. If tapestry weaving is completely new to you, we’ll show you the basics so that you can create your first woven tapestry; if you have experience, this is an opportunity to take your tapestry weaving practice out of the studio and try a different approach.

It’s a chance to share relaxed and creative time with like-minded people, observing the colours, texture and shapes of nature, then creating your own woven tapestry with guidance and support from Irene and Anna.

We’ll be based at Irene’s studio on a quiet smallholding on the Wales/Shropshire border. Located right next to the Llanymynech Rocks nature reserve and within walking distance of the Montgomery Canal and the Llanymynech Heritage Area, we’re awash with artistic inspiration on our doorstep - woodland, wildflowers, the rockwalls of the former quarry and all sorts of associated industrial heritage.

We have our fingers firmly crossed for wonderful weather, but if our luck runs out, we have wet weather options both indoor and out. At the farm, we can make use of our converted barn, or we can sit under cover of the Heritage Area’s Hoffman Kiln to weave the view from its shelter.

The first day will begin with an introduction to tapestry weaving using a variety of examples of work . We'll show the many ways in which the craft can be used to explore the natural shapes, colours and textures of the landscape around us. We will then spend some time outdoors, learning how to look at the landscape around us with a ‘weaverly eye’. What are the shapes that make up the view across to the horizon? Is that patch of grass really a single colour of green? What about the pattern of the bark on that tree? And if these are the things that inspire us, how can we translate that into a woven tapestry?

You will then spend the rest of the course on your own weaving, starting off with identifying what you would like to weave and creating a very simple design. We'll help you with the design, and then be on hand to help as and when you need support as you weave. As the course draws to a close, you’ll finish off your work so that it is secure on the loom before cutting it off ready to take it home with you.

COVID PRECAUTIONS
We’ll operate with suitable measures including: equipment provided for your use will be appropriately cleaned before use; participants will be asked to sit at a distance from one another indoors and out; food and drink will be provided using disposable plates and cutlery if requested.
