About the Course

Two day residential poetry workshop run by the Field Studies Council.

Join award-winning poet Emily Hasler for a weekend exploring nature poetry in the inspirational environment of Dedham Vale. We’ll read and discuss poems before heading out into the stunning surroundings of Flatford Mill to generate our own. Whether you are completely new to poetry or write regularly, this weekend course is a great way to explore the relationship between poetry and the natural world.

Emily is originally from Suffolk and now lives on the Essex side of the Stour where the natural environment inspires and shapes her work. She has been published widely in magazines and anthologies and a pamphlet, Natural Histories, was published in 2011 to critical acclaim. She has led workshops for the Wordsworth Trust in the Lake District and at the University of Warwick.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.

The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
