About the Course

Yes, making paper – out of mushrooms.

Few people know that wonderful craft paper of diverse natural colours can be made from many fungi species, especially tough and inedible bracket fungi. After initially identifying and collecting suitable fungi in the field (or rather, in the woods), we will gather either indoors or at a covered area outside, and do a hands on exploration of the techniques required to produce different grades of mushroom paper. It can be made as thin as tissue paper, smooth and ideal for use in a photocopier, or thick enough to make boxes. After creating our unique papers, we will then use pre-prepared light sensitized mushroom paper to create beautiful photograms (the photograph above is an example from a previous workshop), as well as mushroom paper boxes that can be used to package small gifts.
Sizing paper, which is the internal or external application of various substances to create a paper that can be used for water colour application and other situations where it is important that the paper doesn't bleed the colours, will also be covered. And we will externally size some of our paper with appropriate botanical extracts.

As a by-product of the paper making process, we shall also make a delicious medicinal mushroom soup. Paper takes a couple of days to dry in a press for best results. Your individually crafted pieces will be posted to you once fully dried.
Please bring some simple food to share at the end of the day, if you would like something additional to our soup and wild crafted sourdough.

This course is suitable for anyone, especially artists, those fascinated by fungi, forest school teachers, paper makers, nature lovers, and those interested in sustainability.
