The course offers a creative and relaxing day of mosaicing right on the edge of St Alban's beautiful Verulamium Park. Set in St Alban's Verulamium Museum you're surrounded by magnificent examples of Roman mosaics. The Roman Ampitheatre is just a 5 minute walk from the venue and if you fancy a stroll across the park you can visit the Hypocaust which hosts a spectacular mosaic floor, for some inspiration!
The mosaic workshop is facilitated by Audrey Montet from Montet Designs. Audrey likes her classes to be set at the pace of the individual. So whether you're completely new to working in mosaic, or whether you have done it before, you will have the support and guidance required for your needs. The day begins with refreshments and an introduction to all the materials available for you to use. This will include a wide range of glass, ceramic and stone tiles and also a selection of crockery and mixed media. A demonstration of how to use tile nippers will be given and each participant will be provided with the necessary tools for the tiles they are working with. Participants will be shown how to place and glue their tiles onto their boards. Included in the session is a brief talk from the museums mosaic experts, who will share with the group just how the Roman's set about creating their masterpieces.
Participants will be able to choose either a board or a pot to mosaic on the day. Audrey provides a variety of templates and ideas for mosaicing, but would encourage people to come along with an idea of what they'd like to create, so as to maximise their mosaicing time. Towards the end of the day Audrey will demonstrate how to grout a mosaic and participants then go on to grout their own artwork ready to take home. Should you not complete your artwork within the allocated time, Audrey will provide the grout for you to take away and complete at home.
Refreshments, including a variety of teas, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day and lunch will also be provided.
The tutor Audrey has worked as a Community Artist for the past 16 years and specialised in mosaics 6 years ago. She teaches weekly class in schools, care homes and in the community as well as working on larger projects with a variety of Voluntary and Statutory organisations.
If you have any questions regarding the course, please contact Audrey and she will be more than happy to answer them.
