What's included in the price?
Villa Warda is beautifully situated a few miles outside Marrakech, offering a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for your art holiday. The villa has more than ample workspace outside, on upper and lower terraces, as well as in the grounds and gardens. There are commanding views of the Atlas mountains in the near distance, as well as olive groves, date palms, jasmine and formal rose gardens. The villa is capacious with stylish and beautiful interiors, all commanding wonderful views into the landscape. There are also facilities for Hammam and Spa treatments, heated swimming pool, or just lazing with a drink under a palm tree. The days will more than likely be warm but the nights have been known to be chilly in December.
Painting in the busy streets and markets of the city is challenging, and taking photographs to work from back at the villa may be our best option, but there are even so many amenable spaces to work in around the city, including lovely parks, beautiful ruined palaces, grandiose hotel gardens where working on the spot is easier. I detail below some of the art materials you may wish to carry with you – bearing in mind that travelling light is advisable.
I would recommend water-based media as being ideal for this trip: a box of watercolours or gouaches with brushes, or water-soluble colour pencils – perhaps complemented by a variety of drawing implements such as pencils, pens, fine-liners, sharpies, felt-tips or fibre pens. Bring your (smallish) sketchbooks everywhere, maximum A3 pads, and of course a phone camera to record more rapidly the many visual delights that the city contains. Also consider collapsible seats (with backs?), sun hats, water bottles, and insect repellent.
Participants are expected to make their own flight arrangements. Transport from the airport to the villa, and visa versa, will be available, but not obligatory. For the rest of the week on days out we will all travel together, or individual trips can be arranged. In the city itself, walking is easily the best mode of transportation – to explore the winding streets, alleyways, and markets where we will have a guide at all times. Our visits may include: the ruined palace at Tamesloht; the Yves Saint Laurent Garden; the famous La Mamounia hotel; the souks; the Atlas mountains and their villages, and the Koranic School in the medina. The landscape is always challenging.
