Many people own a traditional satchel nowadays but do many people own a classic, handmade, hand stitched satchel?
Even fewer will own one that they have made themselves.
Here is the opportunity to make your own satchel with tuition from a leather worker with over 35 years experience.
In my week long course you will make your very own satchel from beautiful vegetable tanned leather. Not only that, you will learn about leather, how to cut it and the processes involved in making your very own bag.

The course is designed to equip you with the basic skills necessary for you to continue developing the craft of leather work. The course will be taught using a hands on approach with advice and guidance throughout using a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions and one-to-one, hands on guidance. You will be guided through the techniques used in making a beautiful satchel that is yours to keep.

Students will gain the following skills:
- Learn about different types of leathers and what they can be used for.
- Learn how to cut simple patterns.
- Learn about the basic hand tools used in leather work and what jobs they are used for
e.g. Setting rivets and press studs, hole punching, edge finishing, strap cutting, etc.
- Learn how to fit a buckle.
- Learn to hand stitch leather with linen thread and 2 needles
- Learn to personalize or pattern leather by stamping
- Learn various techniques used in leather work.

Students with no previous experience should attend the 5 day course and will create a traditional “set piece” satchel using mostly pre cut parts.

Students with previous experience of leather work, those that have either attended the 2 day “Introduction to Leather Work” course or those that have some experience of leather craft AND who can already saddle stitch have a choice, depending on experience could design and cut their own satchel. This would be more suitable for previous students who would, in collaboration with myself, design and cut the patterns for their bag on ‘Day One’ of the course.

If you would like guidance on which course would be most suitable for you, then please contact me to discuss your options.
