Rag Rug Making Days with Emma Tennant 9.30 -3.30pm including a lovely 2 course lunch
You will be shown how to plan and create and start making these lovely distinctive rugs.
Emma Tennant lives in Roxburghshire, Scotland. She is widely held as an authority on the history of Rag Rug making. Emma spends her winters making and designing rag rugs which are made by a group of neighbours and marketed under the name Hermitage Rugs.
Emma will bring her rugs for you to see and her own collection of materials to share.
Emma provides traditional frames to use of 3ft x 4ft, ideal for large floor rugs and the type for which she is so well known (though they do reduce to smaller working size if needed). These frames are individually made by a joiner to Emma's own personal design - they arrive here pre-prepared by Emma with side hessian already attached to save time and can be used over and over again.
You can use the frame for the day and just pay Emma for the detached hessian at the end - or you may buy the frame and take it home for £40 - decide on the day.
Similarly with the hookie tool - these are completely hand made by the only man in the country who makes them. Both the metal hook and the handle are forged / turned by him. They are a lovely quality to use and cost £17. You can borrow one or buy it at the end.
WHAT TO BRING?
We will provide the frame and hookie tool to borrow - or buy at the end if you wish. The hessian is included in the £40 charge if you buy a frame- if however you just take the hessian home there may be a small charge payable to Emma.
Some large SHARP dressmaking scissors and some bags of material as detailed above
Do give your design some thought - simple often has more impact.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. The voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Welcome drinks : fresh coffee & home made biscuits, a lovely 2 course Aga lunch served in our farmhouse kitchen or outside in the Greystoke Cycle Cafe Tea Garden as soon as it's warm enough. To finish off the day, a freshly made Cream Tea (including Aga-baked scones, cream and jam).
Our days are considered special treats; many come back time and time again and often combine it with a short break to the Lake District.
We have been hosting and organising 'Quirky Workshops' since 2005 from our friendly family run Cycle Cafe Tea Garden on the northern fringes of the Lake District. All our tutors are carefully hand selected experts and professionals and many considered as leading nationally in their field.
Once again a really lovely day at your lovely home. You are so welcoming and I will be back again, I actively lok for what I can fit in next.
Emma was a fabulous instructor and I feel well eqipped to make a rug from start to finish (which hopefully will be a thing of beauty-but no matter, I will still be immensely proud of it!)
With kind regards

A thoroughly enjoyable day in a delightful setting!
Emma provided excellent tuition throughout. Her rugs are inspirational and I appreciated seeing her at work.
Being able to use and purchase both the hessian/frame and hook there and then, facilitated the whole process and the acquisition of tools for a new adventure.
The hospitality was super with good homemade fare and much appreciated. Even the cream scones at the close slipped down a treat!
Many, many thanks for a most memorable day. Hector says, "Wuff!"
