About the Course
If you have some pattern cutting experience and are interested in creating garments to your own unique shape, this course allows you to create a pattern block in your own individual size. You will learn the basic principles of drafting a block and how to apply your personal measurements. Then you will test your block in fabric and make alterations to ensure a perfect fit. A different block is taught each term - all beginners start with a skirt block. Intermediate skills in pattern cutting are essential. This is an Intermediate level course, however beginners new to Pattern Cutting can be accepted on this course, provided that they also enrol on the current Beginners Pattern Cutting course.
By the end of the course you will be able to
take accurate body measurements.
make adjustments for large/small cup size where necessary
to draft a skirt block (if new to class) progressing each term to a bodice and sleeve block and trousers block to personal measurements
cut and construct your block in calico for fitting
make adjustments to initial draft from calico fitting
trace completed pattern to personal card block
Class format and activities
Whole class study of personal measurements in relation to drafting a block - work in pairs taking accurate body measurements. Whole class study to draft the block using Winifred Aldrich 6th edition. Lots of 1-1 feedback on progress to complete first draft, cutting and machining calico toile. Fittings will be a mixture of whole class learning and some pair work. Handouts and other material will be used to support skill development. Teaching will be in groups and on an individual, one to one basis.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
This is an Intermediate level course, however beginners new to Pattern Cutting can be accepted on this course, provided that they also enrol on the current Beginners Pattern Cutting course.
Desirable entry requirements:
• Have completed 2 terms of Pattern Cutting: Beginners
• Understand what a grainline is and how to use it
• Understand what a notch is and how to use them
• Understand what seam allowance is and how to use it
• Be able to use techniques for dart manipulation, including pivoting
• Have experience of making toiles to fit and adjust patterns
• Basic sewing skills are desirable but not essential
• Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English
• Mathematics and numeracy skills are essential
What you need to know before you enrol
Cutting fabric and fitting can involve standing. Sewing machines have a foot opereated speed control. The fashion studios are on the first floor of theNancy Seear Building and there is wheel chair access via a stair-lift. Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios - no liquids at all are allowed.
What you will need for your class
paper and fabric scissors. basic sewing kit. notepad and 2/3 colour pens, HB pencil, sharpener and eraser. Also: Metric Pattern cutting for Womenswear 6th edition by Winifred Aldrich is the reference book used on the course. It is useful to have your own copy. Some pattern cutting tools are provided in the classroom. Paper and card are available for use in the classroom. Calico for toiling is available at cost price from your tutor you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course.
