About the Course
ONLY FOUR SPACES AVAILABLE for this small class. Stay three nights in one of our gorgeous Tiny Home cabins and take part in this one day workshop with Paul McCathie.
Create your very own wooden spoon to take away and use. This will be your very own useable spoon, made by you…. No experience required – learn a new skill and create your own personal souvenir of the Isle of Wight. Great for anyone with little or no experience in carving or woodwork
We start with the raw materials, a log. We’ll move through the process of turning that log into a functional wooden spoon that can be put into daily use in your kitchen.
You’ll learn about the basic tools needed for this craft and how to use them. We’ll start with an axe to break down the log into useable pieces and form the basic shape of your spoon. Then we’ll create the bowl of the spoon with a traditional spoon carving hook knife, finishing up with carving the rest of your spoon with purpose made carving knife.
The final look and finish will be entirely up to you – leave it with a rustic knife finish for a real home crafted look, use a cabinet scraper to smooth out the knife marks. Or go all the way and sand out all the knife marks to achieve a perfectly smooth spoon.
You’ll be able to take the spoon away and we’ll have materials and tools available for purchase if you want to make more at home or on the ferry home. Keep on whittling!
Tree climbing facilitator and founder of well-known Isle of Wight business Goodleaf Tree Climbing, Paul admits to being ‘slightly’ obsessed with trees and wood. Paul’s originally from New Zealand but he’s lived on the Isle of Wight for 13 years so he’s nearly a local!

Amazing time spoon carving and staying at the tiny homes! Paul was a fab teacher, very patient and helped us all to come away with fantastic and beautiful spoons (much better than we thought we could have done at the beginning of the day!)
Highly recommend to both newcomers to carving/whittling and also those with experience as he catered for all!
The tiny homes themselves are excellent, eco living but with all the home comforts and Helen and Frazer make the stay wonderful!
