About the Course
The class will begin with a little tour of my cosy characterful studio, and a brief intro to lost wax casting. You will each be given two wax ring blanks of slightly different thicknesses. Together we will resize our rings to fit, after which you will have approximately an hour and a half to work on your own, forming and chiseling using carving tools, files, rasps, dental tools and traditional alcohol lamps.
You will learn the fundamentals of one of the most flexible and transferable processes used in commercial jewellery- wax carving can produce something very organic or ordered.
You don't touch any metal with this sculptural technique, and the intimate class size of a maximum of 3 people means you will get lots of help.
If you finish your wax carving in time, it will be sent off to be cast in sterling silver - this will cost extra and is dependent on the weight of your ring. I will cut the sprue off, polish your piece and post it back to you afterwards. You are welcome to work on your own project if you prefer but it is not guaranteed you will finish it in time to cast.
