About the Course

Please join us for a millinery taster workshop. Designed especially for beginners this fun recreational workshop is led by milliner Margaret Woodliff Wright. During the workshop (1-5pm) you will learn to make your own petal fascinator - there will be a choice of petal colours as well a headband, barrette clip or corsage fitting for your finished piece.

The key millinery skills that you will learn during this course are how to create a couture headband, or cover a barrette; how to cut, layer and form the flowers and then attach them to your headband. As soon as the headbands are finished you can try them out as it will be time for tea (included)!

Margaret - The Northumberland Milliner - has led millinery workshops in a number of prestigious locations including The Bowes Museum, The Laing Art Gallery as well as around her cosy kitchen table. She has a showroom in Alnwick, and a studio in central Newcastle and has been involved in millinery practice since graduating with high distinctions in Couture Millinery from Leeds College of Art in 2013. With a special interest in up cycling and recycling, her millinery creations have been seen on catwalk shows and at exhibitions around the world, her work has been featured regularly on social media and fashion magazines. In September 2018 she was delighted to be “hat hunted” by Gok Wan as the resident milliner for his latest road show “One size fits all”.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials, tuition and use of the equipment are included. If you are attending an event during the summer and have trimmings at home that you would like to use - as an alternative or addition to your petal trim - please bring these along too and I will guide you to add these creatively. Once you have booked your place on the course, NB there is a maximum of 4 participants only, I will be in touch to discuss your choice of colour for your petal trim.

The Northumberland based afternoon workshop will run on various afternoons through the summer from 1 - 5pm and will be rounded off by tea, when your new fascinator can have its first outing! Please get in touch for availability. If you are interested discussing how this workshop could be adapted for your bridal shower/hen party event in a larger location please get in touch.

Access to the workshop location – note this course is based at her rural Alnwick showroom in Northumberland. When booking this course please contact us for directions, located just off the A1, we are 10 minutes drive north of Alnwick, or 20 minutes drive from Alnmouth station.

For those of you who would prefer a Newcastle based course, this course can be staged at her centrally located Newcastle studio (NE1). Alternatively please enquire if you would prefer a more intensive millinery course on a 1:1 basis, in either location.

My daughter bought me this course as a Christmas present and I have to say, it was as perfect as a present could be! I really enjoyed making my fascinator. Margaret provided all of the materials and there was plenty of time to complete the task. It was so lovely to wear my fascinator whilst enjoying my afternoon tea too! Excellent course and a fabulous course leader. Five stars!!

Response from Margaret Woodliff Wright Millinery:

Thank you Carol for your review of the petal fascinator course - it was a pleasure to meet you & your daughter at The Bowes Museum for the afternoon workshop. What a great idea for a very individual mother/daugher Christmas present - the gift of a voucher to cover attendance at one of my courses!

The petal workshop is infact a straightforward introduction to recreational millinery and through it, students find it is possible to produce quite impressive results. I look forward to seeing pictures of you and your daughter on an outing wearing your headpieces, in the meantime thank you for your review!

All nest wishes - Margaret

I took part in the course when Margaret ran it at the Bowes museum. Fabulous course, I loved making my own fascinator! Margaret was very patient, as I’m not a very good sewer! Was really pleased with the end result and enjoyed my cream tea too! Would definitely recommend this course, especially for beginners!

Response from Margaret Woodliff Wright Millinery:

Thank you Kayleigh, for your review of the petal recreational fascinator course.

The great thing about this course is that it is suitable for complete and utter beginners - even those with very limited sewing experience can produce a very pretty headpiece during the afternoon. As such it the workshop would present a great “bonding” opportunity - such as a hen party, pre-prom, works’ do, etc..

Whether or not a cream tea is included depends on the location - this particular course was held at The Bowes Museum, and so was rounded off with a cream tea, and as it said in your review Kayleigh, this makes for a very satisying afternoon, all round.

Thank you again for your lovely review of the petal fasciantor class, Kayleigh - Margaret

A fabulous introduction to millinery skills. If you don’t know where to start this course is a good place. Margaret’s courses are very friendly. It is amazing that in an afternoon you can complete a headpiece ready to wear.
