About the Course
Re-create a pattern from your favourite top or skirt without taking the original apart. We all own a favourite top or skirt that fits us just right. We wear it until it is almost worn out and then search the shops to find a replacement without success. This term long course will show you how to make your own pattern that you can use time and time again.
Who is this course for
This course is for anyone who wants to learn to make their own patterns for dressmaking.
You can be a complete beginner at pattern cutting and do not need to have any previous experience. However, the garment you are copying must be very simple in shape and detail. An understanding of garment construction will be useful as you may want to make up a toile (trial). Please bring 2 garments to the first session and the tutor will advise which to use.
What does this course cover
You will learn how to fold, pin and 'trace' your favourite garment without taking it apart. Your tutor will guide you through the basic steps to create an exact copy of the pattern pieces and add the correct seam allowances, darts and pleats and other details. You will work with calico which moulds well to the shape of your garment and then transfer the markings onto paper so that at the end of the course you will have a finished paper pattern that you can use over and over again. Please note that you will not be making a garment during this course.
By the end of the course students would be able to:
* Fold a garment accurately and pin ready for tracing
* Trace garment shape and design features onto calico
* Transfer shape and features into 2d paper pattern pieces
* Add seam allowances and pattern markings
* Lay out a pattern on fabric and cut out
* Understand pattern terminology
* Construct a simple toile
What will it be like
Learning will be facilitated by individual guidance and support from the tutor as well as peer centred learning. Skills and knowledge will be learned initially through visual demonstrations and verbal descriptions then students will work independently with one to one tutor advice and assistance. This will be supported by hand-outs. Students will be encouraged to comment about each other's work (peer centred learning).
Your progress is monitored by tutor feedback and initial, on-course and end of course self-assessment. Individual advice is always available and verbal feedback, support and encouragement is given to you throughout the course.
- Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
- Practical work produced is evidence of learning.
- At the end of the course we will review and assess the work.
What else do you need to buy or do
Lots of pins
3 metres of light to medium weight calico
Tracing wheel (optional).
