About the Course

A fun course for beginners to help you get to know the sewing machine and how to use it more effectively. You will have a range of projects to work on and opportunity to create beautiful accessories for you and your home.

Please note that the course will take place at Blackfriars Settlement, 1 Rushworth Street, London SE1 ORB. This is a new Mary Ward Centre location and is a short walk from Southwark Tube Station.

Who is this course for
6 weeks getting to know the sewing machine and how to use it more effectively. This course is suitable for students who do not have any previous experience or people with limited skills that they want to improve. It would also be beneficial to people who have a sewing machine that they don't know how to use.

What does this course cover
This practical course will cover learning how to operate a sewing machine, identifying parts of the sewing machine, using different feet, changing needles, creating a stitch sampler and stitching basic seams. Students will then complete a small project using the sewing machine skills they have learnt for example to make a simple cushion cover, tote bag or zip purse.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
Have the skills and ability to operate a sewing machine.
Understand how to trouble shoot a sewing machine.
Use sewing machine skills creatively to make a sewing project - cushion cover, tote bag or zip purse.

What will it be like
Learning will be facilitated by individual guidance and support from the tutor as well as peer centred learning. Skills and knowledge will be learned initially through visual demonstrations and verbal descriptions then students will work independently with one to one tutor advice and assistance. This will be supported by hand-outs. Students will be encouraged to comment about each other's work (peer centred learning).
Your progress is monitored by tutor feedback and end of course self-assessment. Individual advice is always available and verbal feedback, support and encouragement is given to you throughout the course.
- Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
- Practical work produced is evidence of learning.
- At the end of the course we will review and assess the work.

What else do you need to buy or do
So that you are fully prepared you will need to bring the following materials/equipment to the first class. You will be expected to practice on your own sewing machine if you have one.
Students will require a note book, A4 folder for handouts, pen and pencil.
Most basic materials will be provided, but students may wish to buy fabric and other accessories for their projects. The tutor can advise.

What this course could lead to
This course could lead to other sewing and textile courses at the Mary Ward Centre or another further education college.Students can progress to many of the sewing classes including Patchwork and Quilting, Embroidery and Dress Making. The student could take a follow up short course or a longer term or year long course. It could also inspire self-initiated projects.
