About the Course
All day 5 week Life & Portrait clay sculpture workshop focussing on one model and one pose: 1st term Portrait head; 2nd term Standing pose; 3rd term life sculpture with option of some costume and props. Choice of composition within pose. Develop observation skills, individual expression, clay modelling and clay preparation techniques for firing. Suitable for all levels, including beginners. New and returning students work alongside each other in a mutually supportive workshop environment. Learners will be encouraged to explore their own personal approach and composition within the pose developing confidence and skills. Extra charges for materials used over and above the allocated material course fee.
By the end of the course you will be able to
Learn and develop observation skills, clay modelling and handling techniques for firing, working from a life model in a variety of poses.
Learn different measuring techniques including taking calliper measurements directly from the model.
Explore colouring and finishing possibilities on completed clay modelled sculptures
Improve skills and confidence, explore new approaches, and develop individual approach and expression through life modelled sculpture.
Class format and activities
You will be exploring and practising clay life modelling, learning to observe and take measurements from the life model developing your own creative approach. You will learn to hollow & prepare your clay work for firing and explore possible colouring and finished techniques. Tuition is primarily one to one and within the class group. Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on new techniques as well as hand outs on Health & Safety, materials and techniques.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
No all levels are welcome
What you need to know before you enrol
Some lifting of your own clay work and studio furniture is required if you are able, but help and lifting equipment is always available if needed.
