Letterpress printing - Beginners
with tutors Ken Burnley and Jon Ward-Allen
Letterpress printing is fun. It's a traditional craft but that doesn't mean it doesn't have contemporary relevance and this three-day course is a great introduction to it. It covers the basic skills of design, typography and letterpress printing using different papers and inks. Working to specific briefs, you will learn about printing techniques and how to print on some of our working presses - starting with work on one of our five Adanas, and then having an opportunity to use one or two of the other presses - an 1864 Albion, a Vandercook proofing press, a Stephenson Blake proofing press, four treadle platens of different sizes (Arab, Clyde, Cropper and Eagle).
The course is suitable for beginners or those who would like to refresh their letterpress printing skills. (Many of our students then come back for themed or more advanced courses - or decide to branch out into bookbinding and paper marbling as well.)
If you are residential, you will arrive on the Thursday in time for the evening meal and then the course will kick off at 9am on the Friday. Meals are sociable events with much discussion of all things book-related. (If you are non-residential, you can join everyone for lunch and tea, and also the Thursday evening meal.) Most people come on their own and if you are planning to do that, you will find you are soon amongst like-minded people. Our weekends are a mix of country house weekend and great tuition - and we hope you will go away not only with some skills in letterpress printing, but also brimming with ideas for what you may do next.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
