About the Course

Learn essential calligraphy techniques and drawn lettering using both nibs and brushes with inks and pigments. Produce artworks and three dimensional objects, cards, boxes, and single section books. A course suitable for all with an enthusiasm for lettering and calligraphic scripts.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Beginners will learn the Foundation Hand. Intermediates will learn the Batarde script.,
You will learn to write numerals, design a motif and pattern using a single numeral.
You will learn to write Roman Cursives.
You will be able to write the Uncial script with a pen and with a brush.
Blind Embossing will be explored and you will produce an embossed monogram.
You will have a basic knowledge of design and layout for invitations.
You will learn how to handle a brush and explore white on black/ black on white
Class format and activities
You will watch the tutor give demonstrations, join in class discussions on homework and receive individual guidance and tuition from the tutor. You will produce lettering that is drawn, done with a brush, and written with a pen at your own speed. Different techniques will be addressed and studied each week.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
This course is suitable for beginners with an enthusiasm for both drawn lettering and calligraphy or for intermediate students looking to further their knowledge of calligraphic techniques.

What you need to know before you enrol
No level of fitness is required although the studio is on the top level but there is a lift. A flexible wrist is desirable.

What you will need for your class
It would be helpful to bring:
• An A3 sketchpad, Goldline, 95gsm recommended
• Pencils (2H and HB), an eraser, ruler (preferably Perspex) and coloured crayons if you have any
What you can do next
The course provides an excellent start to calligraphy and calligraphic techniques. You can continue on to next term. You can also join the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) or the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI).
