About the Course

A 3 day stone letter carving (and relief) workshop with expert Pip Hall suitable for beginners as well as those with experience. Pip is one of the favoured letter carving tutors for the Lettering Arts Trust, and is a renowned letter carver and tutor. She taught here regularly several years ago and we are delighted she is returning to Greystoke to take another of her wonderful courses.

To sustain your carving you'll be treated to lovely 2 course Aga lunches, home baking and fresh coffees/teas. A perfect compliment to your slice of fresh air and downtime in which to lose yourself whilst learning from another 'master' of stone carving.

Pip will guide you through the various processes involved and help you develop your ideas before putting pencil to paper or stone. Over the three full days working under her watchful eye, you will be guided through the world of the stone carver, working on lettering or a relief carving piece, sculpting your design in stone. Students may work outside either in their own space in the sunshine or under cover if drizzly. Alternatively the well lit downstairs studio will be available - an old stone barn which is an unheated space. You will keep warm as you will generate plenty of heat!

Taking place in the environs of the walled Cycle Cafe Tea Garden, the course provides both absorption and relaxation - fresh air and absorption, ideal for anyone with enthusiasm and a little patience...Use of tools and etc. included. Spaces are limited- please see our website to book your place. Or contact us using the link above.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Welcome drinks : fresh coffee & home made biscuits, a lovely 2 course Aga lunch served in our farmhouse kitchen or outside in the Greystoke Cycle Cafe Tea Garden as soon as it's warm enough. To finish off the day, a freshly made Cream Tea (including Aga-baked scones, cream and jam).

There may be a small extra charge for stone provided by Pip - or bring your own piece if you wish and she will deem its suitability for carving.

Our days are considered special treats; many come back time and time again and often combine it with a short break to the Lake District.

We have been hosting and organising 'Quirky Workshops' since 2005 from our friendly family run Cycle Cafe Tea Garden on the northern fringes of the Lake District. All our tutors are carefully hand selected experts and professionals and many considered as leading nationally in their field.

Dear Pip,
We both wanted to say a big thank you for the wonderful weekend we spent with you, beginning to learn how to letter carve.

We had a really great time despite the achy muscles and heads crammed to bursting with new knowledge. Neither of us realised just how physically tiring it would be and I certainly hadn’t banked on brain overload by day three!

You’ve definitely turned us into fledgling carvers, keen to do more, so internet purchases will be made in the next few days, if not this evening. It was certainly a very different journey home, with lettering and stone leaping out at us from every angle. Thank you so much.

Thanks Pip and Annie from us both for such an inspiring course in stone letter carving. Your teaching was excellent - we're so pleased with our pieces and what a great group and perfect setting; the food was a real treat too. After my house name I feel inspired to carry on and have a go at something else, maybe like the relief carving that Dave did. I might try that - if I manage to I will send you a photo!
With thanks again, Cath.
