About the Course
Our Traditional Lampshade Making Workshop is suitable for anyone wishing to learn for pleasure or business.
There are many styles of lampshades and lots of frames available but there are three main types of lampshades: tailored, pleated and a hard or firm frame.
This practical hands-on 2 day workshop covers all the traditional skills required to make a unique hand stitched, tailored or pleated lampshade. You will learn how to choose your frame and suitable fabrics, binding the frame, creating the pattern for different shaped frames, stretching and hand stitching your fabric in place, making the pattern for the lining and finishing off with trimmings.
All styles can be covered as students work on their individual project; tailored, gathered, knife pleats, box pleats etc.
Frames of various sizes and shapes can be bought from Helen on the day but students should bring their own fabric. Light to medium weight raw silks are ideal particularly for pleated designs. A heavier fabric can be used for the tailored designs but please discuss this with Helen before the workshop. Both machine and hand sewing will be required, however lampshade making is predominantly hand sewing and students work on their own lampshade.
Further details and a list of items to bring with you will be provided with your confirmation of booking. Full instructions on how to work with many other types of frames are also covered.
Helen offers a bespoke curtains and blinds service for traditionally hand sewn lined or interlined curtains, roman blinds and accessories through her company, Helen Izzard Designs which is based in Somerset. Helen has also been teaching for over 10 years and holds her lampshade and and soft furnishing workshops in Somerset and the Cotswolds.

I travelled a long way on my own to do this course and I would do it again in a heartbeat! Helen is an extremely positive, upbeat, friendly and patient teacher and having learnt how to make a gathered shade I would like to go back and try a tailored one! Helen brought a group of likeminded strangers together for a most enjoyable time.
I really hope to return soon - if she'll have me!!!
If you've ever wanted to learn this craft please do so with Helen - you won't regret it.

I had the best 2 days and cannot rate Helen highly enough. I arrived a little apprehensive but Helens welcoming teaching style and expertize quickly won me over. I now have the confidence to continue and broaden my lampshade styles and may well attend her next course just for the fun of it.
