About the Course
Lacquer Crafts 2 day Workshop in Bristol and Bath
This two day introductory Lacquer Crafts workshop is for both professional and part time artists and ceramicists who would like to experience the art of working with stains, dyes and lacquers onto three dimensional forms.
Modern lacquers are a joy to work with because each layer is touch dry in around 10 minutes. Therefore an illusionary depth and texture in the smooth surface of the ceramics may be a build-up of as many as 15 layers in a ceramic form within a very short time. The process can be likened to working with transparent layers in Photoshop.
I will start the workshop by demonstrating the effects that can be achieved with the equipment and materials provided. The creativity will then be up to you. And I believe that once you have seen how forms and texture appear to lift from the surface you will become as hooked on lacquer as I am.
What to bring: - Protective clothing (Apron). If you would like to apply images then these need to be photocopies. (Not inkjet printer copies as the ink doesn’t absorb into the surface of the ceramics). Photographs can also be applied to the flat surface of tiles. And also if you prefer to work with your own drawing and painting equipment, bring it along.
I am also available to travel and deliver one day Lacquer Crafts tuition in your own workshop. I can bring a selection of materials and specialist equipment with me to where you are located. The price for on-site tuition, which includes the materials and equipment is £100. Plus the cost of transport to get me there. Just contact me with the details of what you would like to achieve with lacquers.
I look forward to getting creative with you.
A passion for Lacquer:
I first developed my idea of working with stains and lacquers on to ceramics at Loughborough and the Royal College of Art and Design. My work at the time was being exhibited at the British Crafts Centre and Artist Potters Now, Sotheby’s.
Since then I have worked as the properties and effects lecturer at Cleveland College of Art and Design; as an architectural model, pattern and mould maker in London; as a properties and effects manager in Holland; and I have organised and run Arts and Crafts projects for Connexions, the Youth Services and various Councils.
The experience and knowledge that I have had gained working with so many different processes, techniques and materials has enabled me develop new ways of applying stains, dyes and lacquers on to ceramic forms.
It is my passion for the images and textural effects that can be achieved with stains, dyes and lacquers on to the ultra-smooth surface of ceramics that I would like to share with you.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Materials: – Various sizes of bisque ceramic wall platters, plates, boxes, vases, bowls and tiles to work on. Pigments, stains, dyes, translucent lacquers, solvents, latex rubber, sticky back sheets and tapes for masking.
Equipment provided: - Airbrushes, paint brushes, sponges, turn tables, heat guns, soldering irons, knives and cutting boards, drawing equipment and masking and lacquering equipment.

Thank you very much Richard for coming to my workshop and showing me how to work with lacquers. They are so much more controllable than glazes and it has saved me so much time not having to fire my work twice.
I ordered the flourescent pigments that you suggested and the results in lacquer are amazing. I will email you a picture for you to add to your site.
