This is a live ONLINE course using Zoom, over a series of 5 weeks - working with Kumihimo - the art of Japanese Braiding. It is suitable for beginners, but also ideally for those with a little experience creating braids using a foam disk.
I am a professional jeweller and adult education teacher - teaching jewellery making since 2009. I work primarily in silver, but also love to incorporate a variety of other materials in my own work - from textiles to bead to hand carved stones. I love mixing materials and techniques together so have developed a wide range of skills that I share with students and I have a particular fascination with Kumihimo - working on a Marudai (round braiding stand) or on a foam disk / plate.
Teaching live, online, from my studio in central London - this course will be run using Zoom as a live video call - I will talk through each project and related information re techniques, tools and materials, as well as show live demonstrations and answer student questions as you work along from the comfort of your own home. There will be a series of video recordings and information sheets to accompany the course for your reference.
This course focusses on taking the simple basic beginners braiding on a disk to the next stage - creating different flat braid structures and varying these to create zig zag shapes and curls. The focus is on experimenting with learning and adapting braid structures, rather than on creating finished cords or jewellery, although of course you will have the option to finish off or replicate your favourite pieces to create jewellery if you choose to.
Each week we will work on a different braid structure - learning the moves to see how it works, practicing to get used to tensioning the braid, and discussing different colour / pattern making options.
THIS COURSE IS CURRENTLY SCHEDULED TO START TUESDAY 8 JUNE 2021 - FOR A SERIES OF 5 X TUESDAY MORNINGS - 10AM - 12PM
I also offer tuition - online, or in person, in a range of other jewellery making techniques, including:
- Silver jewellery making
- Bead stringing and wirework
- Pearl knotting
- Silver clay jewellery
- Wax carving
- Stitched beadwork
I have been making jewellery for around 25 years, have a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing (1999), and have been teaching jewellery making since 2009, when I completed my initial training for teaching adult education classes. I love making jewellery and sharing my skills with new people from all over the world; I have occasional repeat students visiting from Italy, France, Egypt, Norway, as well as from all around London and the UK.
Get in touch anytime, and we can discuss what you would like to work on and what jewellery you will create.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The price listed is for a series of 5 weekly live Zoom sessions, each 2 hours long, as well as access to pdf instruction and information sheets and videos to help practice and revise the techniques outside of class time.
If a class is missed, this cannot be made up - as a live course - it runs at the selected times/dates only and Zoom sessions will not be recorded for student privacy.
Information from each class, whether attended or not, will still be able to be accessed by all students however, through the pdfs and videos, and of course students can ask questions at any time.
Alternatives are available for private / shorter or multiple sessions, or in person sessions - do get in touch for information.
