This is a great 2-in-1 course covering the basics of traditional kiln-fired glass painting and the assembling of your work into a fabulous stained glass panel. All the techniques used are similar to those used for centuries to create painted stained glass.
On the first day you'll decide on your design and glass colours, cut your glass and paint it. Your work will be fired overnight to make the paint permanent.
On the second day you'll assemble your glass into a leaded panel ready for hanging.
Skills you’ll learn:
~ preparing the paint with a variety of carriers, depending on the work it needs to do
~ how to use the tools effectively
~ cutting and preparing the glass
~ shadows on both sides of the glass
~ special effects
~ highlighting and softening
~ firing the finished piece
Today, you’ll take your glass pieces straight from the kiln and learn how to put them together into a beautiful leaded panel.
Skills you’ll learn:
~ preparing the lead ‘came’ – the channelled lead strips that hold everything together
~ how to cut the lead and apply it to the glass
~ soldering the lead joints
~ puttying your panel
~ making and applying a hanger
~ finishing and polishing the lead.
Where are we? About 10 minutes from Blyth services on the A1M, so really easy to get to.
If you’re not local, accommodation is available at the Blyth Travel Lodge hotel, one or two B&B’s in Harworth itself or there’s a nearby site for caravans and campervans. We’re not affiliated with any of these and you will need to make your own arrangements with them.
If you’re coming by train, we’ll pick you up at the station and ferry you to and from your accommodation each day.
Many of the set course dates are weekends, but I can do any day of the week by arrangement. If the projected course dates conflict with other obligations you have, do contact me and we'll see if we can work it out. I can be flexible and it may be possible to organise another workshop on whatever days suit us both.
