Join artist/bookbinder Cass Barron and artist/writer Julie Galante for this brand new workshop that explores place from a variety of creative perspectives. Combining visual art, writing, crafting, and bookbinding, this workshop will have you getting to know your city as you never have before.
Each week we’ll cover specific creative techniques and apply them to our investigation of the city. We’ll start out by binding simple sketchbooks to contain our experiments and field notes. We’ll fill them up with writing and images prompted by a series of creative assignments which will have you out exploring your chosen city first-hand (although many of them can also be completed from the comfort of home).
From here each participant will be encouraged to deepen their explorations in whatever direction interests them most - be it a series of written reflections, sketches, photographs, mixed-media pieces, mental maps, or a unique, personal combination of all these. Finally, we’ll look at ways to combine these elements into a series of Artists' Books and a unique keepsake book to store them in, which will marry form and content. There will be an optional Facebook group for participants to stay connected and share their creations with each other between live sessions.
Live sessions (all UK time):
6 Oct, 6-7.30pm
13 Oct, 6-7.30pm
20 Oct, 6-7.30pm
27 Oct, 6-7.30pm
24 Nov, 6-7pm (regroup/sharing event)
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
This workshop includes five live sessions (via Zoom) with Julie and Cass, and video tutorials and other ‘homework assignments’ for participants to complete in between live sessions. Cass and Julie will be journalling in their home city of Edinburgh, but you are welcome to join in from any city (or town) in the world. The group will be kept small to ensure plenty of opportunities for interaction.
A full materials list will be provided to participants in advance. We will also make some of the harder-to-source materials available to purchase as a separate kit. We don’t expect that the basic materials required for this course will come to more than £50 (but if you would like to expand your art supplies and invest in more expensive brands, there is always the option to spend more). We are in the process of preparing a final kit list for this course and will share it with you well before the start date. This will include easy-to-source materials such as paper in a range of sizes, paints, pencils, brushes, pens, glue, bookbinding tools, card, and thread. You may already have many of these materials to hand.
