About the Course

This introductory course is ideal for those who have been making metal jewellery, and now want to learn to design and develop their own unique style. Explore creative ways of developing ideas through guided drawing and model making exercises. No prior drawing or design experience is needed

By the end of the course you will be able to
source inspiration and collect this in a paper-based or digital format
use a range of methods to develop inspiration into jewellery designs, such as abstraction, repetition, scaling up and down
draw a piece of jewellery
make a range of 3D models in paper, wire, clay
discuss, analyse, select and edit designs to create a and develop a personal style
Class format and activities
You will learn to transfer inspiration to jewellery designs through a series of guided exercises. You will try out various methods of designing jewellery such as drawing, sketching in 3D with wire, paper and clay. After experimenting with the various materials, you will select and edit your designs and create a plan drawing, ready to be developed in the workshop.
Peer discussions will be part of the class and you will receive plenty of 1:1 support.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
All levels welcome. You may find you have been learning technical skills and now want to shift the focus on developing unique jewellery designs. If you are new to jewellery making, please bear in mind that at the end of the course your designs may need further developing before being made.

What you need to know before you enrol
Knowledge of using a computer , smart device or tablet to research ideas is useful but not essential.

What you will need for your class
A sketch book.
A mechanical pencil is useful but not essential.
Bring with you a range of items to draw inspiration from. These can be: physical objects (toys, natural forms, etc), images or a book with work of your favourite artist/architect/musician/designer, interesting mixed media materials to play with and anything else you can think of.
If you have a smart device, tablet or laptop, you may wish to bring this in to search for inspiration online. (not essential)

What you can do next
You may want to start developing your designs in the jewellery studio with the help of a professional tutor. Morley offers Jewellery classes day, evening and weekends for students at all levels of experience.
