About the Course

These classes are led by a local jeweller who has been teaching her practice across Scotland for 4 years. Alana comes from a background of textiles and ceramics and graduated with first class honors in Jewellery and metal design at Duncan Of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, before setting up her own jewellery and contemporary craft business East Nook Studio, in St Andrews. Creating silver and mixed media jewellery, Alana offers a host of classes to keep your hands busy and your imaginations full!

Introduction to Jewellery Making
This is a class for beginners, to introduce you to the art of making jewellery. The first week we will look at cutting and shaping the metal, applying textures with a variety of tools and rolling techniques. We will practice soldering with a small blow torch to bond two pieces of metal together, before looking at the process of ‘cleaning up’ your samples to give them a polished finish and discussing how they could be turned into a piece of jewellery should you wish to continue with jewellery making. In the second week we will concentrate on making a silver ring, utilising the techniques that you have learned and furthering your skills. You may want to bring a notebook to jot down ideas and processes for future reference.
If you have enjoyed the introduction, you might wish to attend the further jewellery class where you can begin to make a collection of silver jewellery.

For those who have previously attended our jewellery workshops or the introduction to jewellery, this small block is a chance for you to further your jewellery making skills. You will be provided with silver sheet, wire and findings to design your own creations. Your tutor will be on hand to guide you through your designs and to help with techniques such as texturing, rolling, soldering, saw piercing, forming, granulation and oxidising. These techniques will progress on from those already demonstrated and allow you a chance to play and explore new ways of using your skills.
Bring a small notebook with you to note down ideas, draw sketches of designs and to jot down handy hints and tips on methods or useful websites. Reference books and a small image library are at hand to skim through for further inspiration.

In this quick workshop you can make a textured silver ring using simple soldering and hammering techniques, ready to wear that evening!

Choose to make a set of 2 silver textured bangles held with a ring, or one wider silver bangle.
In this workshop we will solder, form and texture the bangles with our tools before polishing these up ready to wear. Please let us know when booking if you wish to make a single bangle or a set of skinny bangles.

In this one day workshop we will explore the possibilities of colour in jewellery through anodised aluminium.
Experimenting with colouring aluminium, you will learn to use dyes and inks with printing and resist techniques to create pattern on the metal, before fixing the colour. Playing with texture and form through a variety of tools, we will worktowards making a piece of jewellery. Silver fixings will be used to connect the aluminium if making a wearable piece.
