About the Course
These classes are led by a local jeweller who has been teaching her practice across Scotland for 4 years. Alana comes from a background of textiles and ceramics and graduated with first class honors in Jewellery and metal design at Duncan Of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, before setting up her own jewellery and contemporary craft business East Nook Studio, in St Andrews. Creating silver and mixed media jewellery, Alana offers a host of classes to keep your hands busy and your imaginations full!
INTRODUCTION TO JEWELLERY MAKING
This is a class for beginners, to introduce you to the art of making jewellery. The first week we will look at cutting and shaping the metal, applying textures with a variety of tools and rolling techniques. We will practice soldering with a small blow torch to bond two pieces of metal together, before looking at the process of ‘cleaning up’ your samples to give them a polished finish and discussing how they could be turned into a piece of jewellery should you wish to continue with jewellery making. In the second week we will concentrate on making a silver ring, utilising the techniques that you have learned and furthering your skills. You may want to bring a notebook to jot down ideas and processes for future reference.
If you have enjoyed the introduction, you might wish to attend the further jewellery class where you can begin to make a collection of silver jewellery.
