About the Course

Cover a wide range of enamelling techniques including sifting, stencils and sgraffito to explore colour, surface and pattern on metal. Experiment with jewellery and industrial enamels on copper, silver and steel. Suitable for all levels. Basic materials included.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Understand the process of enamelling and how to apply liquid and powder enamels
Use sgraffito, stencils and mark-making techniques
Have knowledge of more specialist techniques such as enamelling on an altered surface, underfiring and the use of enamel transfers
Use tools and equipment safely
Develop an individual style and a collection of enamel samples that explore your personal aesthetic
Use your samples to develop some simple pieces of jewellery
Ongoing and intermediate students will make a series of samples that will build on previous experience and allow for the refinement of skills and the development of an individual style via the medium of enamel
Class format and activities
Each week there will be a number of demonstrations that will introduce a variety of non-traditional and experimental enamelling techniques. After each demonstration you will have an opportunity to make your own samples using the techniques shown. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit. The tutor will work with students one-to-one and in groups. As the course progesses you will have the opportunity to develop the techniques you have been shown and to create finished pieces using the techniques covered.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements although previous experience of jewellery making will be beneficial and an interest in enamelling is essential.

What you need to know before you enrol
This is a practical course. The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. For health and safety reasons you should not sign up for this course if you are pregnant. Appropriate health and safety guidance will be given as each new technique is introduced.

What you will need for your class
All tools needed to take part in this course are available in the workshop.
It would be helpful to bring: A sketchbook, notebook, pen and drawing materials; protective clothing e.g. an apron and closed toe shoes. We will be working on copper and steel both of which will be available in the workshop.
