About the Course

Make a small bowl or an embossed tile in copper by using the traditional silversmithing techniques of blocking out, hammering and planishing. Learn the invaluable skills of how to manipulate metal with the use of hammers and punches.

By the end of the course you will be able to
To select a suitable design and transfer it to the annealed metal
To manipulate metal on a larger scale – max 20cm x 20 cm
To raise a three dimensional form from a flat sheet of metal
To use doming and embossing hammers
Class format and activities
You will learn how to transfer a simple image onto a sheet of copper. With the use of embossing hammers working with sandbags and wooden blocks you will learn how to create a three dimensional relief panel by raising some areas of your image and depressing others. We will also explore raising a small copper bowl. This is a practical course and will involve the use of hammers so a certain amount of arm strength will be required. The emphasis of the course is on individual tuition. Each stage of the process will be demonstrated both to the group and to individuals as appropriate.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
