About the Course
The influence of Japanese aesthetics on Western art in the late 19th century, known as Japonism, will be the focus of this course.
Japanese prints in particular had a profound effect on Western painting and graphic art, as well as on decorative art. Western artists were inspired by the treatment of colour and shade, unusual viewpoints. Explore the works of Impressionists, Postimpressionists, the Nabis and artists of Art Nouveau. Find out how Japanese art stimulated objects Western craft and design.
The course will not only focus on Japan’s impact on France, but also take a look at the reception of Japanese art in other European countries and America.
By the end of the course you will be able to
Become familiar with Western artists and their work that was influenced by Japanese aesthetics
Develop an understanding of the new ideas of composition, colour and subject matter that inspired Western artists, artisans and designers
Be able to name key artists and important works of Japonism
Class format and activities

• ask questions related to the topic

No previous knowledge of Japanese history or art history is necessary.
What you need to know before you enrol
This course makes no physical demands.There is a lot of listening, observing and discussing. It takes place in the Art History lecture room B13 which is accessible by lift.
What you will need for your class
Paper and pen will be useful for making your own notes in class.
