About the Course
On this course you will make two traditional Japanese books, one with a decorative Japanese single-sheet binding and one more unusual but also traditional Japanese style of multi-section book with a slightly complex, beautiful sewing technique which allows the book to lie completely flat when opened..
By the end of the course you will be able to
Make beautiful books in a variety of Japanese binding styles
Use bookbinding tools for cutting, folding and sewing paper with confidence
Know about paper grain and its importance in bookbinding
Continue making books at home, as no specialist equipment is needed for these bindings
Class format and activities
In the first session you will learn how to do a single sheet Japanese binding sewn in a decorative style. In the second and third session we will make a Japanese multisection book, cutting paper to the right size, folding the sheets to make up the signatures, preparing book covers and sewing the signatures.
There will be demonstrations, practical work and one-to-one tuition.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
No previous knowledge of bookbinding is needed.

If you have them: Notebook, pencil, rubber, metal ruler, craft knife, bone folder, scissors.
