This summer school course will present major themes and significant artworks of the special exhibition ’Japan: Courts and Culture‘, originally planned to be shown at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace this summer. It will introduce you to the Japanese masterpieces from the Royal Collection which would have been on display.
Examples of Japanese porcelain and lacquer ware, armour, embroidered screens will be discussed and the socio-historic context as well as the artistic background of the works of art will be explained. The custom of diplomatic gifts and the cultural exchange between British Royals and the Japanese Imperial family will be highlighted and we will look at how this shaped the collection.
Class format and activities
• learn through tutor presentations
• listen to tutor presentations and explanations
• take own notes
• participate in class discussions and group work
• ask questions related to the topic
The two hours, offered online through ‘Teams’ or "Zoom"will include slide presentations where your tutor will lead you in in a discussion on the possible meanings, purposes and histories of the works of art looked at. Observations, debate and further questions will be encouraged and materials will be shared by email. The class may divide up into "breakout" groups online to consider different aspects of the images. Most of the works chosen can be found in the Royal Collection in London and we hope that you will be able to examine them in person once lockdown restrictions have been lifted.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
No previous knowledge of Japanese history or art history is necessary.
