About the Course

Learn the basic principles of how to control clay and make a pot using the potters throwing wheel. You will have sole use of the wheel and be guided by group and individual demonstrations by an experienced production potter.

This course will allow you to get a feel of what it is like to work with clay and glaze and begin to understand it’s potential to make a form using the potters throwing wheel. We will look at different types of clay and learn how to shape and mould it, experiment with the some options for decorating the clay surface through mark making and completing the form with a basic introduction to glazing. There will be a £2 per kilo charge for clay work to be glazed and fired. There are 10 wheels in the department so you will have sole use of your own wheel for the length of the course. Students will be asked to move around the wheels as many are different.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Preparation of clay, wedging, etc
Centring, , pulling up and gaining control
Mugs, jugs, bowls
Turning to complete the bases of work
Handles and spouts
Clay recycling

Class format and activities
Observation - Watching demonstrations of the individual techniques of throwing and turning and practice these to achieve the result required.
Discussion of forms and feedback on work produced. Group and individual tutorials. "Show and Tell" session of finished work
Observation of basic glazing demonstration and personal application.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
This course is suitable for beginner level or for those who need a refresher.

What you need to know before you enrol
Both wheel throwing and wedging clay requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns (back problems, for example) please come and see your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.

What you will need for your class
Sketchbook / notebook.
Some throwing tools will be provided but students should bring tools where possible and wear protective clothing.
We make a charge for clay used at £2/kilo, before the first firing only.
