About the Course

Using a two-thread sewing machine is a useful skill to have for so many things but if you are interested in clothes making, soft furnishing, etc. it is absolutely vital. This course will help you get to grips with the intricacies of the two-thread machine and to overcome your fears. Learn how to set up a machine correctly, to solve problems and to produce a variety of samples using available stitches. Suitable for beginners or those who need to develop confidence with the machine.Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.

By the end of the course you will be able to
• use the features of the machine appropriately
• produce simple seams and seam finishes, and practice simple processes
• use the machine manual for support
• carry out simple maintenance of a basic domestic two-thread sewing machine
• use the features of the machine appropriately

Class format and activities
You will set up and thread a two-thread domestic sewing machine, practice using various features of the machine to produce a number of samples and use the machine manual throughout.

Teaching is delivered ONLINE both as a whole class, small-group discussions and teaching, with real time support using video demonstrations, photos and explanations and PDFs, as well as group discussion/ troubleshooting.

There is an experienced and well-staffed Morley IT Department which will assist you setting up for the online course. Attendance and punctuality is crucial. You will not achieve the desired learning outcomes if you cannot attend fully. Please inform your tutor regarding any lateness or absences.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.

Entry requirements
This is a beginner’s course. All are welcome, suitable for people with limited or no previous experience.
Access to a working sewing machine at home IS ESSENTIAL.
Access to a desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone is also ESSENTIAL. You do not need any previous experience of participating an online course. Students must be able to communicate in English, and basic numeracy is an advantage.

What you need to know before you enrol
This is an online course, offered during COVID-19 restrictions. Your tutor will be available during course hours and will provide feedback where possible. You will need to have access to a computer, the internet and email and to download Zoom or Teams (instructions to be sent in advance of the course start date.

What you will need

You will need:
• PC or Laptop or Tablet - Android or IOS (Apple) with webcam & microphone.
• An up-to-date internet browser installed.
• A good broadband connection is also recommended. (Mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle might not provide sufficient bandwidth).

The materials you need are:
• 1 metre of plain or patterned 100% cotton fabric
• Fabric scissors, trimming (small) scissors
• Pins, tape measure, sewing thread
• 16 cm (8”) plain zip
• Pens, pencils, notebook.
