Description

Learn how to make stained glass terrariums for indoor plants using the 'copper foil method' in this one day introductory workshop for complete beginners.

This workshop is designed for a maximum of 2 beginners only, so you will have plenty of individual help as well as easy access to tools and equipment.

You will be guided through the stages of creating a small (approx 20cm on longest length) open front (or partially open fronted) stained glass terrarium for plants and mini-gardens using the copper foiling method which includes learning the following:

* Using stained glass design patterns (choose from a small selection of terrarium patterns suitable for complete beginners)
* Cutting glass
* Using the glass grinder to finish glass shapes and their edges
* Adding copper foil to the glass outline shapes
* Creating a solder join to attached the stained glass design shapes together
* Adding a solder bead to the surface of the copper foil joins
* Patinas and their uses
* Finishing and polishing
* Health and Safety when working with stained glass techniques

We will be working with lead-free solder for this project. This means that plants can be placed directly into the terrarium without lead contamination.

The copper foiling technique, best known for its use in the Tiffany Studios in the late 1800's for their lamps, and especially useful for small pieces of glass and curved glass designs where the traditional lead came was too large to work effectively.

Suitable for both beginners in a maximum group of 2 (please enquire for groups of 3-4 booking together as a group).

As there are very small numbers in this workshop, you will be able to learn and progress at your own pace during the day.

This is a busy day with lots to learn but it's very enjoyable and you will leave with a good foundation of skills as well as a small complete terrarium.

Once you have attended the workshop for complete beginners with us (or a beginner workshop/course elsewhere), we have further workshops planned to improve your basic knowledge and to allow you to make more varied designs, including how to add hinges to make closed terrariums.

You will be provided with safety equipment including eye protection, dust mask for glass grinding, disposable gloves for use with patinas, and (most importantly) plenty of ventilation. We politely request that Health and Safety advice is followed and safety equipment is used as instructed.

Please note: Plants are not included in this workshop which is for learning the art of stained glass

We would advise that this Workshop is unsuitable for attendance during pregnancy. Although we are working with lead-free solder, flux gives off some gasses when heated during solder work which make this unsuitable for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Manual dexterity is needed for creating stained glass - you will be offered as much help and support as you need during the day to be able to complete your stained glass creation.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
