About the Course
Release your inner creative on our two-in-one Introduction to Soap-Making workshop run by Edinburgh designer-maker Jenny Smith of The Scottish Soapworks.
On this full day workshop you will learn two soap-making processes. In the morning you will learn how to create a log of cold-process soap ready for curing on our soap rack for 21 days, and in the afternoon organic 'melt and pour' glycerine soap.
The day begins with a background to the design and soap-making process. You will then learn about the properties of our cold-process soap and selection of essential oils, and choose two recipes to make. Working in pairs, you will learn how to make up and line a mould in preparation for soup-pouring. When the soap has cooled, you will pour your soap into moulds and watch a demonstration on how to cut cold-pressed soap.
After lunch you will make organic 'melt and pour' glycerine soap ready for pouring into moulded shapes of your choice. While your glycerine soap is cooling, you will select gift wrapping items from our craft table for wrapping your glycerine soap ready to take home.
After 21 days your soap will be sent to Jenny for cutting. We will contact you when it is ready for collecting. Alternatively you can have your soap posted to you for cutting and gift wrapping at home.
Jenny has many years of experience in the soap industry, and those who are interested in setting up in business to make traditional cold-pressed soap can book onto a follow-up course at The Arienas Collective to learn about sourcing, labelling and other commercial matters.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience. We begin the day with a welcome coffee, and will break for a buffet lunch in between the two soap-making processes. We also take a break for tea while your glycerine soap is cooling. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
*This workshop is also available to book as an afternoon-only session where you will make the organic glycerine 'melt and pour' soap only.
Our artists will support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips on design, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The price includes all materials and refreshments, and of course you get to take all the products your have created home to enjoy and inspire you, or to give to family and friends as unique gifts.
An absolutely wonderful course in soap making in very relaxed and beautiful surroundings. The warmest of welcomes from Lynn and Jenny, made it a really special day. The soap making was very well explained, and to see the finished soaps gives a real sense of accomplishment, I now can't wait to make my own. We shared some absolutely gorgeous food, and its a great chance to have a chat and socialise. An amazing day. Xx

Response from The Arienas Collective:Hi Libby. Thanks so much for your really lovely review. We're so glad you enjoyed your day with us so much. We hope you will continue making your own soap at home, and look forward to seeing photos! Hope to welcome you back to The Arienas Collective one day. Best wishes, Lynn x
Everyone was immediately put at ease by Lynn’s warm welcome in such beautiful surroundings. The day starts with a cup of tea/ infused water and a brief chat about the day. The tutor is Jenny, who has years of experience in the soap industry.
The attention to detail is wonderful for everything about the day. We were learning a new skill with detailed instructions, friendly chat, generous offers to share further knowledge and a lovely environment to learn in.
As if learning how to make soap wasn’t enough fun we were then given the option to create wrappings for our soaps. The table was a crafters dream - laden with tissue paper, wrapping paper, coloured twine, stamps, pens, scissors, gift bags…. This section of the day could have been a workshop on it’s own.
I felt entirely looked after, deliciously fed and came away with 8 glycerine soaps (with more to come when the cold pressed one’s have cured). This is a wonderful way to get away from everything as I honestly had no other thoughts in my head during the day. It would also make a great party for a group of friends or even a very relaxing way to do some gift shopping.

Response from The Arienas Collective:Thanks for your lovely feedback Sarah. I'm so glad you enjoyed your day, and that the craft table was such a hit. We love seeing people getting creative wrapping up their soap, and you certainly gave us some excellent ideas! Hope you're enjoying the cold process and organic glycerine soaps you made. Best wishes, Lynn :-)
This workshop is great fun and seemed remarkably easy (but don't tell everyone as I have been impressing friends with presents of my hand-made soap ever since!). This was partly due to the relaxed atmosphere and everyone was really friendly - we chatted over coffee and shared ideas
so I never felt I was working on my own. It would also be great to do with a bunch of friends or for a special occasion. As well as fun on the day, it was lovely to have something to take home and use - hand made, designed and packaged by ME! I highly recommend you give it a go.
Anne A - - #17241
Response from The Arienas Collective:Hello Anne. We're so glad you enjoyed your glycerine soap-making workshop. It is an easy process to learn, but of course it's all down to you to which shapes you make, and how you choose to gift wrap the soap - and that's what makes it unique! So be proud of your truly hand made soap! Glad your friends are getting to enjoy your lovely soap too, but hope you kept some for yourself :-) Hope to see you back again soon, Best wishes, Lynn
