About the Course

Curious about making your own paper? This is the perfect introduction to making your own pulp, forming sheets, adding colour, decoration, and shape. Go home with paper for your own projects. A great preparation for our more specialised courses too.

If you have ever wondered how handmade paper gets its special character and texture, this is the class for you. Learn all the core techniques for preparing pulp, forming sheets and then enhancing them with decoration, colour and shape. You will learn about papermaking’s sustainability and versatility, and leave armed with a variety of papers that you can use for your own projects or gifts. This short course is also an excellent introduction to our other, more specialised classes for students who catch the papermaking bug and want to learn more.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Prepare pulp for sheet forming using appropriate fibres
Form consistent sheets of paper on a mould and deckle
Add colour and decoration to your paper
Create different shaped sheets of paper
Class format and activities
In the first session will learn all about equipment, pulp preparation (recycled and new fibres) and confidently making rectangular sheets of paper. We'll follow by adding colour, decorative elements and shapes to our sheets. During the second session, there will be plenty of time to practise and experiment with guidance from the tutor. You should go home with a stack of unique sheets for your own projects.

Each week there will be a chance to look at samples and examples, and participate in group discussions. Show-and-tell sessions are held regularly as a means of sharing experience, troubleshooting and inspiring others.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
The course is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced papermakers who want to try out new ideas or to work on their own projects.

What you need to know before you enrol
You will be working with water and coloured dyes so wear old clothing and bring an apron to protect clothing. Where water is used you will be made aware of the risk of slipping and students need to ensure water is mopped up during the session. You will work either standing up or sitting. Students co-operate to clear up the communal working areas at the end of the session and to put away equipment.
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS or Art & Design Admin before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs.

What you will need for your class
You will need two or three packs of low-cost flat J Cloths, a waterproof apron and some carrier bags to take damp work home in.
