About the Course

Discover the art of Hat Making on this fun introductory weekend course. Working with Textile Artist Jill Peer, at the end of the weekend you will have created a fabulous hat or corsage to take home.

During the weekend you will create a hat from a loosely pre-prepared hat form. You’ll be shown how to whip and lash items to embellish them into your fabrics in an easy abstract fashion, including elastic sewing methods. You will be guided in piecing the hat and decorations together, with demonstrations and explanations of methods, such as the choice of colours, tensions, thickness and length of thread.

The course will be run by Jill Peer – a textile artist who specialises in unique and striking hats. Jill Peer describes her practice:

‘I have been making and designing hats for over 12 years. I use mainly preloved fabrics and use them constantly in my hats and corsages. I enjoy blending textures and colours with other items such as feathers, silks, nets, wires gems, broken jewellery and nylons. The hats have developed from a simple cloche style to the brimmed model.’

There is an element of free design to the course and Jill will be happy to discuss your designs and methods further. You are free to use your own choice of materials and decoration, which could include elastication, embossing, and embroidery.

* You are welcome to bring your own needles and recycled materials, such as old jewellery or scraps of fabric, if there is something in particular you would like to include. If you would like to bring a sewing machine, please let us know in advance.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
