About the Course

Learn how to use traditional hand tools including a shave horse, drawknife knifes, axes, straight blade knife, and curved 'hook' or spoon knife. Craft and carve a range of items including spatulas, spoons, butter knives, gypsy flowers, and three legged stools. You will also learn safe knife techniques that can be used to carve beautiful walking sticks.

Students must be physically fit, able to hold and manipulate tools.

Tutor Information
Phil Harwin has been practising and teaching greenwood crafts and practical woodland management for the last 15 years. Prior to that in 2002 he set up The Tree-Claim Project, a wood recycling venture, teaching creative and practical woodwork skills to people of all ages and abilities. Phil also worked for Cornwall College as a Programme Manager and Lecturer in Countryside Management and Wildlife in Further and Higher Education. In 2011 he helped set up the Greenwood Garden at Dame Hannah Roger's at Seale Hayne, working with a range of students with learning difficulties.
Phil now manages a 40-acre ancient Oak woodland where he delivers a range of courses including practical woodland management, greenwood craft and greenwood music courses, which provide therapeutic activities in a relaxed and healthy learning environment.
