Introduction to bushcraft - Level I

Successful friction fire lighting on our Peak District Course Bushcraft Course

About the Course

COVID 19 UPDATE – 30th May 2020
With the further relaxing of lockdown announced this week we are pleased to be able to say that we hope to be releasing dates for courses very soon with a view to be running again by around mid June.

Under current restrictions our courses will be a maximum of 5 clients with 1 instructor. We do aim to have more dates available than previously to ensure people can get on them. There is also the option for a private day should you wish.

We have obviously been looking through our operating procedures to ensure social distancing and good hygiene standards can be applied as much as possible.

As mentioned previously we will not be able to offer 'open' family courses but if as a family you wish to come and have a private day which will allow for social distancing then we will be happy to arrange that, the day can obviously be tailored to your family’s requirements.

There is obviously an additional cost to private days, but we are reducing this to make it more accessible so please get in touch.

We will be contacting clients directly who have been unable to attend courses due to lockdown with a further update shortly.

Please share with your friends or anyone that you feel may be interested in a relaxing, fun and dare I say educational day plus its great for your mental health, an excellent way to wind down after being locked up!

We look forward to welcoming you to the woods soon, in the mean time stay safe, stay happy, be nice to each other.

This course will introduce you to the main skills you would require to survive and leave you with a good understanding which, if you wanted to, can be taken further to increase your depth of knowledge and ability.

As most things in the outdoors take longer than expected we will be working in groups to ensure topics can be covered efficiently.

Subjects covered;
- Your natural surroundings and interpreting them.
- Shelter building using natural materials.
- Fire lighting including selection of suitable tinder.
- Water, sourcing, collecting, filtering and purifying.
- Additional subjects which may get covered if we have time;
Natural cord / string making using many different materials.
Camp gadgets.

A real adventure which will introduce you to many bushcraft skills. A great way to experience the great outdoors while learning.

What people have said about this course;
“I was bought a day course from my sister for a Christmas present to attend Red Oak Bushcraft day course and I only have positive praise for the course and Peter, the instructor. The course was organised but relaxed and Peter was never far away to offer advice when required. I learnt a lot for a relatively short bushcraft course. Bushcraft isnt all about fire but we all know thats the most rewarding skill to learn; I have since gone on to make fire by bow drill on my own after this course! Thanks Peter.”

"Had a great day and learned lots ! Brilliant and friendly instruction , cheers Peter. Would highly recommend the coarse"

Had a great time on the Level 1 Bushcraft course! The weather was miserable but Peter was attentive and good humoured, always had a brew on over the fire and made sure that the activities could be done under the canopy as well as in the rain! Learnt lots of new skills and Peter told us about the benefits of various trees and bushes without it being dry. Peter also took photos and gave us access to the box so we could re-live the memories from the comfort of the sofa! I hope his new woodland offers even more!

The introduction to bushcraft course was fantastic. Pete really knows his stuff and is great at explaining ideas and ways of doing things. There was a good range of topics with just about the right length of time spent on each. We really enjoyed the practical work - the exercises were great fun and cleverly designed so that everyone got a chance to practice the skills and techniques. We would highly recommend this course - a brilliant way to spend a couple of days. And the burgers weren’t half bad either...
