About the Course

On this full day combination workshop with two of our local artists - bookbinder Cass Barron and The Edinburgh Sketcher Mark Kirkham - you will create a personalised, hand-bound sketchbook and begin to fill it with your own sketches.

You will begin your day with Cass, who will help you to create your own A6 (landscape) leather, or pleather, covered sketchbook, complete with decorative exposed stitching and a nifty fastening to store your pens and pencils. Then after a well deserved lunch break, you and your newly bound book will take to the streets for a sketching tour led by Mark Kirkham, aka The Edinburgh Sketcher, where you'll learn some tricks of the trade and get some gentle encouragement to fill those blank pages. On colder days, sketching will be mainly indoors at the amazing Scottish Portrait Gallery.

This workshop is a great opportunity to let your creativity flow in a supportive environment, learn a range of skills and leave with a personalised sketchbook.

The workshops are also available to book separately (visit our website for details).

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials, refreshments and lunch are included on the full day workshop. Plus the artists will have kits available to buy should you wish to continue your bookbinding or sketching at home.

Superb course by Cass. Loved the materials used and how it’s transformed into an amazing hand bound book. Love mine so much!

Super class. Well organised in a lovely casual environment. Good hands-on tuition from Cass for the bookbinding. Really love my sketchbook-it's been much admired by my arty and non-arty friends alike! Afternoon sketching was really enlightening. Picked up a lot of tips from Mark on how to tackle line and wash subjects, perspective, tone etc. Especially appreciated the care taken to accommodate dietary requirements for snacks and lunch. All in all a real treat of a day!

Response from The Arienas Collective:

Hello Shona. Thank you so much for your lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed both workshop sessions - we think it's a great combination: learning how to make your own sketchbook with Cass, and then taking it out and about with Mark to start filling the pages with sketches. Lovely to hear it's being much admired by friends and that you picked up so many helpful tips. We hope to welcome you back to The Arienas Collective soon. Best wishes, Lynn :-)
