Introduction to Book Illustration in the Lake District

This one day course will be an introduction to the basics involved in book illustration.  There will be an opportunity to look at and discuss some book illustration examples for inspiration and we will warm up our creative energies with some simple character design.  Using a provided text we will look at how to divide a narrative into pages for a book and use this to create storyboards as a visual guide as to how the book will be paced.

Participants can pick individual pages from their story boards to create 'roughs' to show how each page will look with a focus on page layout, composition and the interplay of words and text on a page.  These 'roughs' will then be worked up into final versions of the pages using a choice of artistic mediums.  Depending on how fast individuals work there may be time to progress on to multiple pages of the narrative but everyone will be encouraged to work at their own pace.  Throughout the workshop, there will be opportunities for class discussion and the sharing of ideas, inspirations and feedback, and suggestions on each other's work in the form of informal critiques if participants are comfortable with this.

This class is perfect if you have an interest in book illustration or an idea in mind but don't know where to begin with it.  No specific illustration experience is necessary but some prior drawing experience would be beneficial and an interest in the creative and imaginative is a must!

Sophie Martin is a local artist, illustrator and educator who specializes in lively pen and watercolour illustrations, often drawn on location.  She studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and has since worked as a freelance artist and illustrator undertaking numerous commissions and exhibiting locally and further afield.  She has self-published a number of books.  She has a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and has experience running creative workshops in many places, including schools, colleges and refugee groups in India and Nepal.
