Introduction to beekeeping near Bishops Waltham

Introduction to beekeeping near Bishops Waltham

About the Course

This 7week evening course gives the underpinning knowledge for keeping honeybees and understanding their needs. It will also cover what you need to consider when buying equipment, siting your apiary and obtaining your bees as well as the volunteer support structure which exists through British Beekeeping.

The 2 hour sessions are a mixture of powerpoint lecture and physically going through a 'mock up' hive. There will also be a Saturday or Sunday session going through a hive of live bees, with each student having an opportunity to handle frames.

The practical usually takes place the following spring. We will agree 3 dates for the practical and the practical will then take place on the first of these dates with suitable weather.

Beekeeping, particularly for beginners is weather dependent.

If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Tea, coffee, peppermint tea. For the practical we provide beesuits but you need to bring wellingtons and marigold type gloves.

I highly recommend this course! It’s suitable for a complete beginner as well as someone just starting out with bees or someone wanting to learn something new. It was professionally delivered throughout, the course content was detailed, educational and thoroughly enjoyable!
Louise and her husband were exceptional hosts, both welcoming and engaging. I learnt so much within a short time. The handouts covered all aspects of bee keeping, as well as hive products and honey tasting - a book's worth of information! There were lots of items to look at and pass round, books available for viewing as well as the actual hives to learn how to put together etc. I have since joined the association, where there is a strong emphasis on education. I’m so glad I found this course, I would advise anyone thinking about attending to go and book now!

Having completed Louise’s course in December 2018 we established our first colony in April 2019. The structure and content of the course along with Louise’s enthusiasm for beekeeping and willingness to share her own experiences enabled us to prepare well and go ahead successfully. Louise took us through all the crucial first practical steps of beekeeping and the essential underpinning information relating to the practical basis of beekeeping, colony life and health; the use of the “virtual” hives allowed us to put theory into practice and become more confident.
Would recommend Louise’s course to anyone who has already decided to start beekeeping or for those who are yet to decide whether it is for them.

Response from Louise's Apiary:

Thank you Steve. Glad it has allowed you to get started and progress your beekeeping.
