About the Course
Designed especially for beginners and led by milliner Margaret Woodliff Wright, this course will provide you with a taster of millinery. Over three x three hour sessions at my central Newcastle studio (6 - 9pm) you will make your own trendy wool felt headpiece, in the very popular and easy to wear “button” style. The key millinery skills that you will learn during this course are how to stiffen, steam and block, wire, edge, and trim your wool felt headpiece.
After choosing your button shape, I will show you how to prepare your wool felt cone for blocking. When your piece is dry (normally in the second session) it is removed from the block, the edge is wired & finished and your button is lined. Then the fun part starts in the third session – designing and making the decoration, the image shows a dahlia style felt flower, but there are lots of other options too! Once the trim is complete I will show you how to attach the fastenings to your headpiece, how to wear your button and provide you with some aftercare tips.
Margaret is “The Northumberland Milliner” and has led millinery workshops in a number of prestigious locations including The Bowes Museum, The Laing Art Gallery as well as around her cosy kitchen table! I have a showroom in Alnwick, and a studio in central Newcastle and have been involved in millinery practice since graduating with high distinctions in Couture Millinery from Leeds College of Art in 2013. With a special interest in up cycling and recycling, my millinery creations have been seen on catwalk shows and at exhibitions around the world, and my work has been featured regularly on social media and magazines. In September 2018 I was delighted to be “hat hunted” by Gok Wan as the resident milliner for his latest road show “One size fits all”.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials, tuition and use of the equipment are included, as well as your wool felt cone, however as everyone has a favourite pair of scissors or thimble many participants feel happier bringing their own home sewing kit, and apron is useful too. Please also bring along any fabrics or trimmings you have at home that you may want to use (as an alternative or addition to your felt trim) and I will guide you to add these creatively. You can also purchase additional materials at the workshop, or locally in between the sessions.
Once you have booked your place on the course – there is a maximum of 4 participants only – I will be in touch to discuss your choice of colour for your wool felt. NB. Early booking ensures more choice just in case the supplier is out of stock, so please note the cut off period for pre-ordering your felt is 14 days before the first session!
This central Newcastle based course will run for three evenings, for consecutive weeks from 6 - 9pm. Access to the workshop location – this course is based at my central Newcastle studio, where there are lots of adjacent public carparks available; we are a 10 minute walk from Haymarket Metro, and 20 minutes from the Central Station.
For those of you based in Northumberland get in touch for details of my next Alnwick (NE67) based course. Alternatively please enquire if you would prefer 1:1, in either location.
