What a lovely way to spend a day. In no time at all we were making our weaves and experimenting with different wool, textures and techniques. Alice is a great teacher and so talented. Working in her studio was really inspiring as we got to be surrounded by her amazing work. The location at the Hot Walls was also great- creating a perfect opportunity to scour the beach for driftwood afterwards!! I bought a loom from Alice to experiment at home and I'm addicted. Thanks so much- see you soon!!!

I went on Alice's workshop last weekend in Gunwarfe Quay. I really really enjoyed the day. I actually managed to use 3 colours which I haven't done before. I would love to do another day in Alice's own studio. I would recommend this relaxing but informative workshop to anyone interested in textiles.
SUe Brewer - - #11602
I really enjoyed my first try at weaving on a frame loom with Alice. All equipment was supplied including materials.
Alice's instructions were clear and she gave individual tuition when required. She has inspired me to do more and I will attend another workshop.
It was a wonderful day.
Cherryl Martin - - #11530
Very enjoyable and relaxed course with Alice. Started as a complete beginner. Learnt a lot. Pleased with the piece I made in the class and bought the lap loom to make more at home. Thanks Alice.

Had a great workshop at the Aspex Gallery with Alice Hume, teaching Frame Loom weaving, yesterday.
Eva Fraser-Harris - - #11478
The venue was comfortable and welcoming. Plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits and a very good canteen a few doors away. Alice was a 100% available during the day. She took us through how to prepare the small looms for weaving, attaching various threads, weaving, finishing off and how to make a tassell finish. There was a good variety of wools, fabric, ribbons. Her own work on the walls gave inspiration. She was patient and offered ideas with colours and texture and wools. I did not finish my work and bought the loom it was on to finish at home. I felt the loom was a bit expensive given I was attending a workshop...maybe a small discount? A few written notes and photo of loom, how to start would have helped as I tend to forget things (am a senior🙁) and am a visual learner .Also maybe Alice could have a few simple booklets/books to sell. Overall it was an excellent day and I would recommend the workshop to anyone either just to try out or to start on the weaving journey. I am hooked😊 ! thank-you Alice.

Enjoyed a lovely day in Alice's studio learning how to weave, properly! Dabbling at home is all very well, but learning how to do it properly is so much better. Classes are small so you have all of Alice's attention and get to take home a finished piece of work.
Greta Friggens - - #10633
I have never done weaving before and this was a great course. Alice is a really good teacher and it was an inspiring place to learn, especially when you see the beautiful pieces she creates. I would recommend Alice and I'm now hooked so thank you!

I had a lovely day learning to weave at Alice's unique studio in Old Portsmouth. It was so interesting and therapeutic to learn something new, and to be taught by someone with extensive knowledge and experience of the craft. It was great to be able to buy some equipment at the end too - a beautiful, handcrafted loom and a variety of shuttles. Thoroughly recommend.

I had a great day at Alice's weave workshop. The space itself was inspiring with all of Alice's art on display. Alice was awesome. Very patient and enthusiastic and great to have general chit chat with. Tools and materials were high quality and the best thing was being able to buy the loom to continue my new hobby at home.
Jenna Smith - - #9846
LOVED it - we were so inspired! Alice is super patient, and all her help and instructions were really clear. I was so happy with the result, the looms were beautiful, fabulous location, Alice was so kind sharing loads of hints and tips - and my goodness Macrame is now calling!
Thank you! x x

What a wonderful day spent in Alice's studio! I highly recommend Alice as a teacher, patience, skill, knowledge, enthusiasm and gentle encouragement were all in plentiful supply. I was really impressed with the quality and abundance of materials and delighted with the beautiful wall hanging I was able to produce in such a short time and with no previous experience. Thank you Alice and I look forward to learning more from you in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed Alice's workshop yesterday. The studio was inspiring with her work on display and her approach is calm, friendly and supportive. The hours flew by and we all said how relaxing and therapeutic it was to do. I bought a loom at the end of the day and set it up as soon as I got home, keen to get started-I think weaving is going to be addictive!

I met Alice during my research for the University of Portsmouth masters program in interior design. I was amazed with her work and loved her approach to the making process. I decided to give it a try and join one of her workshops which was yesterday.
I had an amazing time. Alice is a wonderful tutor who spends the time to explain and show the process of weaving in a pleasant way. Her choice of colour and material is very creative. The atmosphere in her studio is inviting and comfortable. I weaved yarn on the loom along with lovely group of ladies over tea and biscuits. The location allowed us to have a quick lunch at the canteen which is five minutes walk from Alice's studio.
At the end of the workshop, each one of us managed to finish a lovely weaved artefact to take home and enjoy.

A fantastic, creative day. Such a chilled environment in which it learn a new skill. Alice is clearly both skilled and passionate about her craft, and is also a very professionl tutor. She is very patient and calm, and this helps to create a great environment in which to be creative. She makes a good cup of tea, too!

What a lovely way to spend the day...time with Alice and 2 other creative ladies learning how to weave, sharing stories, being inspired by Alice's work and the Hotwalls Studios.
It was a lovely peaceful space interspersed with Alice's patient guidance and instructions and cups of tea.
I came away feeling that I'd really accomplished something unique and found the process of weaving meditative and exciting. I still have more to learn and hope eventually to buy my own small hand loom.
Nina Lazarski - - #8973
I took part in Alice's weaving workshop last weekend and it was brilliant! A lovely calm, talented and patient teacher, like minded fellow students, and a whole day to be creative. I have wanted to weave a picture for ages and Alice enabled me to fulfill this and be very pleased with the result! The hotwalls canteen food was really good and so you don't need to take a packed lunch, what a bonus. I can thoroughly recommend this course, to learn a new skill and have a super creative day in good company.
Hilary Dickson - - #8759
I enjoyed the workshop and it more than lived up to my expectations. A lovely social day spent with others. Alice is very calm and encouraging. It was good to complete a small wall hanging during the day. I would recommend the workshop. Go with a friend and have lunch at The Canteen at the Hotwalls - it makes a great alternative day out.
Linda Taylor - - #8401
The course I attended on the 18th March 2017 was run at the hotwalls old Portsmouth by Alice it was really enjoyable and provided tea or coffe and lunch was at the nearby canteen with in the hotwall I had a sense of achievement that I had tried something new and completed the project set before me .
Margaret Bishton - - #8303
I looked at the piece of frame loom weaving I made yesterday and felt proud.
Thanks to Alice's skill, patience and gentle approach, I didn't feel inept for more than a few minutes!
I'm going to mount it on a larger piece of fabric and add to it; not sure what yet but I've played around with string, buttons and shells so who knows?
Thank you Alice for inspiring me to try a different craft.
Sue Harrison - - #8214
I had a great day learning to weave, It was very relaxed and Alice was friendly and helpful. It was most interesting seeing how everyone in the group were able to get to grips with the technique put their own personality into their pieces.
Hollie Crosley - - #7639
I enjoyed my weaving day in Portsmouth and if you'd like an introduction to this fascinating craft, I'd recommend it. It's a good chance to relax and learn from Alice, how to prepare the loom and start to create your own design-as simple or complex as you like. In a small group, Alice will instruct you when you need it or leave you to just enjoy the process, and there's the bonus of purchasing the loom at the end if you wish. Hope to do more days when the opportunity arises.
Elaine webb - - #7508
I've just had a wonderful day weaving with Alice. There were 4 of us on the course and Alice was very attentive, which meant that we had individual help as soon as we needed it. Her instructions were very clear and I was really pleased to come home with my tapestry, and excited to do more and finish it. I have just booked onto the next course and am looking forward very much to another creative day.
Sue Sherrington - - #7320
Had a really enjoyable Saturday at Hot Walls in Portsmouth on one of Alice's courses. It was lovely piecing together different colours and textures of yarn to create your very own piece of weaving to take away. I loved it, and bought a loom and will be doing something on my own as soon as I get the time. Would love to do another course.
Jane Cunningham - - #6711
A great day at Alice's workshop in Portsmouth. The workshop was very informative and unrushed and we were all able to work at our own pace which allowed each of us to create a unique weaving to take home. I have been able to try out what I learnt at home and would love to come on another workshop in the future to get more ideas.
Viki Burton - - #6708
I had a great day earlier this month learning to weave (from scratch as I had never even touched a loom before!) at Alice's Studio at The Hot Walls, Southsea. She really is the most delightful girl, very attentive and patient, and as the group only consisted of another 3 likeminded ladies Alice gave us all the attention we needed. I was delighted with what I achieved and look forward to attending another workshop with her before too long.
I can recommend her courses and indeed a visit to the Hot Walls Studios as they are great.
Gilly Ines - - #6504
I had a very interesting and relaxing time at Ichen Valley Country Park learning how to weave. Alice was very calm and patient teaching a small group of ladies and encouraging us to get the best out of our weaving. Each piece was individual and beautiful. I enjoyed using different yarns and discovering their effects. Thank you Alice.
Patricia French - - #5900
Thank you Alice for a really nice, relaxed day learning the basics of weaving on a loom. I have been saying weft and wite all week! Hopefully I will remember the directions of the weft and warp threads!? It was a lovely group and I wish you great things for the future and will try and come and see you at The Hot Walls studios in Southsea.
Julia - - #5893
What a fabulous day to spend emerged being creative and learning a new craft. Fantastic teaching and warming enthusiasm on the history and future of weaving from Alice. She really is an ambassador for the craft and her workshops and own work are a clear representation that weaving can be as contemporary an art form as it is historical. Highly recommended for all ages, levels and those wanting to indulge in a new form of craft.
Rosey Stride - - #5372
I went on the 1 day course at Making Space recently and found it so inspiring. Alice is a really patient teacher and gives you plenty of room to explore your own ideas. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone. You have the option of buying the equipment for a very reasonable price. I did and made two more weaves the next day!
Terri - - #5320
I went having never tried weaving before and I can honestly say it was one the most enjoyable and rewarding workshops I have been to. The entire group finished with a beautiful weaving within the given time of the session. Wonderful experience! Has inspired me to take up weaving myself!
Megan Humphries - - #4971
I wanted to learn the technical aspects of weaving and how to use more than one colour, travelled to Portsmouth for the weekend especially to attend the course - loved every minute and learned a lot. It was a nice relaxing day and I bought one of the lovely looms home with me, can't wait to carry on trying new things. Thanks Alice! :)

I had a really enjoyable day learning the art of weaving with Alice. Based at Make in Fratton we had a cosy set up and a small group meant that help was there when you needed it! Alice is incredibly knowledgeable and patient with everyone especially as everyone was working on different designs! Left feeling utterly inspired, my new purchased loom in hand I've started my second weave already! Thank you Alice!
