About the Course

Create texture and pattern on fabric using a variety of Japanese and other techniques with indigo and fibre reactive dyes. Shibori techniques include arashi (pole wrapping) itajime (folding and clamping)and tesuji (pleating and tyeing) and tritik (stitching). Beginners and experienced students will be able to produce exciting results. Students will be advised by email in advance of the course, on suitable fabrics to bring to class.

By the end of the course you will be able to
prepare and use an indigo vat safely
produce indigo dyed cloth in different depths of colour
make samples using different resist methods
understand something of the history of indigo in world cultures
Class format and activities
Students will be preparing the chemicals for an indigo vat. Cloth using resist techniques will be prepared. These will be stitched, folded, clamped, pole wrapped and tied. Students will also have the opportunity to explore shibori techniques using Procion fibre reactive dyes.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

What you need to know before you enrol
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access is via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 or Art & Design Admin on: 0207 450 1934 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs.
Indigo can be messy, wear old cothes.

What you will need for your class
Rubber gloves, an apron, 2 or 3 newspapers, sewing kit with scissors, strong thread and needles, skewars, an empty plastic 2 lt bottle, string, 5 metres of white or cream cotton, linen or silk, natural fibre threads for dyeing, notebook and pencil. Plastic bags to take work home.
