Kiln-fired stained glass painting: 1-to-1 in a working studio, focussing on techniques. The contents depend on you. Beginners will want an intensive introduction to the core skills e.g. tracing, shading and highlighting. Those of you with some experience will benefit from learning how things are really done when your living depends on it; also, how to do all your tracing, shading etc. front and back, with water and also oil, in just one firing. Professionals also welcome: they already come to us from all over the world e.g. Japan, Canada, Peru, USA, Australia, South Africa, Kuwait, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Singapore: we're worth travelling to study with.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I could not have asked for more from an intensive, technique based, bespoke course. First of all I would just like to say how much I enjoyed it. I needed to learn as much as possible in the two days I had and I came away feeling like I had certainly done that. I was exhausted but in a good way! The investment of time and money is repaid tenfold if not more. Not a minute was wasted. The individual attention enabled me, as a beginner in glass painting, to come away feeling clear what it is I need to learn to do through my own practise, as well as feeling very inspired. It was such a positive experience and it is clear that their skills are not only in their profession but in their understanding of how to teach. I just have to mention that the studio is in a beautiful spot too. They are clearly exceptionally good at what they do and to be able to learn from them was invaluable to me. Thank you again.
A superbly designed, and intense, learning experience. Tailored to my needs, combining personal technique demonstration with immediate application to live work. Each stage over 3 full days revealing further technique to build on and reinforce the previous - a true journey of discovery. This course is truly transformational, arming me with the confidence and techniques to push forward with my ambitions at a much higher level.
David and Stephen are wonderfully generous glass design and paint skill mentors, combining serious work expectation with genuine supportive interest. What a rare privilege to learn from artists at the top of their conceptual and technical game. The best investment I have made in glass.
Thank you for the great couple of days that I spent with you guys, it gave me the confidence and vision of what can be achieved with patience and practice to produce wonderful stained glass.
I have a long way to go but the foundations have now been put in place thanks to Stephen's step by step instruction. So onward and upwards and,,,,, I will master the flooding technique :-)
Last week we travelled from Holland to the beautiful Shropshire, where I spent an intensive 3 days painting with Stephen & David. They are great teachers and very generous people! It was a "tailor made" course were I got the answers to the questions that I came across painting at my own studio. They have given me confidence, so I can practice all the things I've learned, and take my painting to a higher level. So Stephen and David, I cannot thank you enough for a wonderful time at your studio!
I was lucky to spend a very concentrated 3 days of hard work with the kind and generous spirited Stephen and David. I felt they took great care to make sure that they were helping me to overcome particular problems which we had discussed briefly by email beforehand and which were worked over in the studio. I really liked that the teaching was flexible in as much as it took shape around what was needed, and we took time where it was required to really focus on these difficulties always making helpful observations and steering me in the right direction. I came away feeling that we had run through everything from the beginning in a way which gave me confidence in what i needed to do in a very practical sense to improve my painting. Their teaching enabled me to confidently bring everything i had learned home and put it into practice in my own work. I now feel i have the fundamental tools to keep practising and improving through time.
I can't imagine two finer or more gifted teachers than Stephen and David. The instruction, which was "one on one", was completely geared to the level and speed at which I was advancing. No rushing to new techniques if I hadn't mastered fundamentals. Most importantly, they brought me to an understanding of the medium- in all its ongoing, dynamic, idiosyncratic dimensions.
I had long wanted to study glass painting with Williams and Byrne but found it difficult to take time out of my busy stained glass studio. Getting a Professional Development award from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers was the excuse I needed and it proved to be one of the most valuable things I could have done. My three days with W&B were rigorous and intense. I was taken, step by step through all the skills and techniques I would need to replicate their single fire method. No detail was spared. Everything I needed to know, from what brushes (and where I could buy them) to use to how to hold my bridge and paint brush were covered. And, of course how to mix the perfect. I made copious notes which are a great reference to me when I get a bit stuck in my workshop. I don't think I will ever be able to paint with the consistency, discipline and expertise of W&B but I at least have the tools now to try. Many thanks to David and Stephen for their patience and commitment to the teaching process. I loved every moment. Good lunches too!
All art is tension between technique and concept. When beautiful but fractious glass is involved, good techniques are a must. I travelled from Australia and spent two very full and structured days working purely on techniques with Stephen and David. It was worth every moment. It has given me confidence and comfort in technique whilst I explore conceptualisations.
Thank you both very much for an amazing three days. Thank you for your warmth, humour and hospitality - as well as for all the revelations about the single-firing method and using oil with silver stain. Thank you, David, for your expert detective work, and Stephen for finding the exact piece of glass to enable me to progress a replica of John the Baptist's legs. I cannot thank you enough for an absolutely wonderful experience in your beautiful studio.
Long may you have joy and prosperity in all you do.
I flew from Colorado, US to attend a class with Stephen and David in mid-October 2012. It was a wonderful experience. The instruction is serious and specific. The steps are purposefully structured to build layers of skills. I felt empowered and am looking at painted glass with understanding and confidence. I came to the class with a desire to acquire an ability to move to a new level in my art and design. It will be exciting to put my new skills to use. Staying in Ludlow was also really enjoyable.
