About the Course

This course offers a stimulating and structured approach for experiencing artwork today. The course will unpick ideas and theories to facilitate your reading and articulation of artworks. Each week a range of artist practices, themes and modes of working will be explored and discussed. Mediums will include performance to painting, reflecting on contemporary art movements, their motivations and case studies of influential artists.

Who is this course for
This course is for anyone who wants to gain an appreciation of contemporary art, where and how we view it, and how to articulate and respond to it.

What does this course cover
We will consider Appropriation Art and ask what is Postmodernism and how does it react against Modernism? We will explore today's Art movements and find out how technological developments affect the canon and approaches in Contemporary Art e.g. Post Internet Art, 3D printing.

We will look at how social media affects the organization of Contemporary Art and ask what Political and Philosophical approaches and thinking are applied within artist's practice e.g. Feminism and Art, L.G.B.T

What will it be like
There will be slide presentations and tutor lectures.
There will also be group discussions and question and answer sessions around culture, religion, technology, social and political developments, in relation to the development of the visual arts. Some additional reading might be given to those who would like it.

What else do you need to buy or do
Please bring a notebook and pen to make notes. The tutor will also recommend further reading and works of art to look at to deepen your knowledge and understanding.
