About the Course
Combine a holiday in the Lake District National Park with an in depth week-end learning the ancient art of hand spinning.
Learn the essentials of fibre design and how to create the fibre you actually want. Start out in our fleece store to learn about fleece selection, grading, purchase. Spend time working with the different aspects of fleece preparation. Move on to carding on a drum carder, and then start to spin on drop spindle. Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle progress to a wheel. Set up your chosen wheel from a variety of different makes and models. Master the principles of setting your tension, spinning using properly controlled drafting, and how to establish a balanced ply. Create and finish your own skein of hand spun fibre.
Places are limited to a small group of up to four to ensure high level of one-to-one tuition. Tutor Elaine Ware brings many years of experience in hand spinning, an in-depth knowledge of the subject and an international reputation for excellence.
Stay in our 17th century traditional farmhouse on a former country estate in the English Lake District National Park. The spacious house features oak beams, wood-burning stove, two-foot thick walls, and bags of historic character
