Join me for two days of woodland craft giving you a general introduction to green woodworking and time to enjoy camping out in the woods as the season is changing. All food is provided my woodland cooks and included in the cost, all you need is some simple camping gear and some enthusiasm! I offer a special deal so that if you book with a friend you will each get £20 off the course fee.
On the first morning you'll select and fell your own ash tree, then limb and split it into workable logs. Working in pairs you'll use the green timber to finish construction of a shaving horse - a traditional bodging tool that you sit astride to hold the wood while you shape it. You'll then use the shaving horse and traditional green woodworking tools to make a wooden spoon and spatula and butter knife from the rest of your tree that you can show off at home.
The 14 acre ash woodland is on a gently sloping site and features two clearings. We'll be camping at the top edge of the woodland and wake up to a breathtaking view of the Malvern Hills. Food will be provided by woodland owners Maureen and Charlie, and we'll fire up the pizza oven followed by a campfire on Saturday night.
The projects are suitable for beginners and improvers, with a maximum of six on each course. I'll provide all the tools you need, including a whittling knife that you can take home and keep. If you've attended my evening classes in London you'll know to expect an informal but informative weekend.
The woodland is near the village of Welland, to the south of Great Malvern in Worcestershire. It lies at the foot of the Malvern Hills, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
If you're coming from London, trains with no changes depart hourly from London Paddington to Great Malvern and from there the woodland is a ten minute drive by taxi, or we can pick you up depending on timings.
If you prefer to drive, there is plenty of parking on the surfaced track at the entrance to the meadow, just below the wood.
You'll want to arrive by 10.30pm on Friday or before 9.30am on Saturday and depart after 2pm on Sunday.
