About the Course

Learn to engrave on coloured and colour overlaid glass. Several different engraving techniques will be explored, using drill and or the lathe. Intermediate students can develop an interesting extension to their skills and beginners will find it just as diverting.

This eight week course provides a rare opportunity to learn glass engraving on coloured and colour overlaid glass. Several different engraving techniques will be explored, using drill and or the lathe. The course focuses on the many options that working on colour provide for the artist engraver, whether working on flat glass – of interest to stained glass artists – or blown forms. Those who have already attended classes in glass engraving may find this an interesting extension to their skills and beginners may find it just as diverting.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Understand which glass engraving tools and techniques you prefer to use with colour on glass.
Be confident to choose a suitable method of working
Understand more about sourcing coloured glass and choosing suitable examples
Appreciate the many different methods of obtaining imagery and effects on coloured glass
Class format and activities
After initial introductions, to each other and to the classroom layout and tools, we shall start with an overview of coloured and colour overlaid glass, ancient and modern, illustrated with images. Most classes will start like this, using the screen both for the illustration of a weekly course topic or when particular subjects crop up. All skill levels are welcome, so beginners will be given a gentle start with basic engraving equipment on offcut samples while the more advanced familiarise themselves with the materials and tools available and discuss their proposed projects. Each class will include a series of illustrated ten minute topics before students’ progress their own work at their own pace, assisted by the tutor on a one-to-one basis. When something occurs with a particular student’s project that will be of interest to others, then their attention will be drawn to this and students will find each other’s work and progress useful to follow too. It is possible for a student of any age to make a simple and effective glass engraving. The more practice that can be done at home, the faster will be your progress.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
