About the Course

This course provides a rare opportunity to learn glass engraving, its history, its tools and its many applications, classical and contemporary. Several different engraving techniques will be explored, from diamond point, through drill to wheel engraving. The course focuses on the development of practical skills alongside an appreciation of glass engraving itself and the many interesting effects that can be obtained on glass, not only as an artwork, but also as a sculptural object in light that throws colour and shadows, even providing the means for simple printmaking.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Understand which glass engraving tools and techniques you prefer
Use surface, stipple, relief, and intaglio effects on clear and colour overlaid glass
Understand more about glass and the most suitable types for your work
Draw, apply and engrave a simple design
Class format and activities
After initial introductions, to each other and to the classroom layout and tools, we shall start with an overview of glass engraving, ancient and modern, illustrated with images. Most classes will start like this, using the screen both for the illustration of a weekly course topic or when particular subjects crop up. All skill levels are welcome, so beginners will be given a gentle start with basic engraving equipment while the more advanced familiarise themselves with the materials and tools available and discuss their proposed projects. Each class will include a series of illustrated ten minute topics before students’ progress their own work at their own pace, assisted by the tutor on a one-to-one basis. When something occurs with a particular student’s project that will be of interest to others, then their attention will be drawn to this and students will find each other’s’ work and progress useful to follow too. It is possible for a student of any age to make a simple and effective glass engraving. The more practice that can be done at home, the faster will be your progress. Every year, there is the option to make a guided visit to the glass collections of one of London’s great museums, led by the tutor.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements for this course. It is open to beginners and more experienced students alike. An open mind, a determination to draw and improve drawing skills and a growing interest in glass in all its many forms are all useful.

What you need to know before you enrol
The glass studio is on the third floor, however there is lift access. Students work on their glass at a bench which may involve intense periods of using a motorised tool and bending over your glass. When working the glass dry you are required to wear a mask for Health and Safety reasons. At times you will be required to wear eye protection.

What you will need for your class
Pencils, spirit based pens fine and medium tip (CD markers work well), biro/ball point pen
Drawing paper
A plain (colourless) tumbler or vase or small glass object that you wish to engrave. Charity shops are a good source! Please do not bring heatproof or shockproof glass as this is not suitable. Ordinary table glass tends to be fine, but pub/restaurant glass is often shockproof.

What you can do next
This is a progressive course and you will benefit from continuing on the same course next term where the tutor will be able to help you develop your style and engraving skills.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
