About the Course
Introduction to making your own glass beads. In a few hours of one-to-one tuition I will show you the fundamental skills of this fascinating and beautiful craft
Make your own glass beads by melting coloured rods of glass in an open flame, using a technique called 'lampworking'. Alternating between a series of demonstrations followed by your practice and experimentation.
I will show you how to form a basic bead, and then add embellishments such as dots and stripes.
The sessions are one-to-one and include use of all tools and materials. The beads will then be kiln annealed ( held at a particular temperature to reduce internal strain in the glass and make them very durable) They will be posted to you free of charge. They will also include the demonstration beads made on the day.
The classes are held in my lovely bright Studio located 5 minutes walk from the train station in the heart of Sheffields Cultural Quarter. I usually run sessions from 10am -1pm or 2-5pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
You are welcome to bring a friend. If you like you can split the 3 hour session, giving you approximately 1 and a half hours each on the torch, making beads, which would reduce the cost to £35 per person.
Aprons and protective glasses are provided. Wear clothes you feel comfortable working in, and if you have long hair please tie it back.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Use of all tools and materials, including safety eyewear and apron.
A thoroughly enjoyable activity, very peaceful and highly recommended. Julia gives expert demos then gently guides you through as you make your own beads. I was very impressed how much was achieved and love wearing the beads on a bar brooch.

Where do I even start? I had an absolutely amazing afternoon with Julia. The time whizzed by and I'm really excited to see the final product (I only did it yesterday. They should be in the kiln as we speak!).
I'm definitely going to find the time to go back so that should be enough to tell you to book on yourself!

Brilliant course, loved every minute of it and would recommend it to anyone. I learned a lot and it was great fun. Only problem is I want to do it again I feel a new hobby starting. Julia is a good tutor and taught me lots, for any one wanting to try this I would definitely recommend this course.
